Illegal migrant apprehensions drop as Biden ushers in Trump-era policies: Report

Illegal migrant apprehensions dropped in February as the Biden administration brought back Trump-era immigration policies, CBS News reported Tuesday, citing internal federal data.

Border Patrol recorded approximately 130,000 illegal migrant apprehensions in February, marking the continuation of a two-year low that began in January, according to CBS News. President Joe Biden expanded in January the Trump administration’s use of Title 42 to expel illegal migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti and Nicaragua.

“When new policies are announced, there is typically a little bit of a pause when people try to understand what the policies might mean for them,” Doris Meissner, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute who previously oversaw the now-dissolved Immigration and Naturalization Service, told CBS News. “But this is more than a temporary pause.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) saw a record of more than 2.3 million migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2022.

To further stem the flow, the Biden administration is said to be considering restrictions on asylum and a return to illegal immigrant family detention that both resemble Trump-era policies.

The numbers of illegal migrant apprehensions are expected to surge in May, CBS News noted.
