Two deans of a Denver, Colorado, high school were injured after a shooter opened fire and fled the scene on Wednesday, according to the Denver Police Department.

The suspect, a male student at East High School, allegedly pulled a firearm while school administration was conducting a daily pat down as a part of a safety agreement, according to the Denver Police Department. Law enforcement are searching for the suspect who is on the run after shooting the two deans.

“Nothing trumps the safety of our young people in this building and this faculty and staff,” the Denver Police Department said in a press conference. “And we feel for them right now. This should never, as a parent I can tell you, never be a concern of a parent whether or not their kids are safe in a building.”

Both deans were transported to a local hospital where one is in critical condition and in surgery, the police department reported. The other dean is in serious condition, but stable and able to speak.

The suspect was under a school “safety agreement” because of past behavior incidents, according to Denver ABC 7. All school districts within Colorado have active “safety agreements” with students.

“In terms of what we can expect at East from here until the end of the school year, in collaboration with Chief Thomas and with support from our mayor and also communicated this to the Board of Education that we will have two armed officers here at East until the end of the school year,” Dr. Alex Marrero, superintendent of Denver Public Schools, said at the press conference.

Denver Public Schools and Denver Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
