‘Real racism problem’: Sunny Hostin suggests Republicans wouldn’t vote for ‘someone’ like Tim Scott

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin claimed Monday Republicans wouldn’t cast votes for Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina after echoing that the party had “a real racism problem.”

“I don’t know who his message is supposed to resonate with actually,” Hostin said after co-host Sara Haines noted that the declared Republican candidates included two black men, Scott and talk-show host Larry Elder, Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian-American businessman who is Hindu, and former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who is Indian-American.

Scott announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 20204 Monday after filing the formal paperwork Friday. He launched a $6 million ad campaign promoting “individual responsibility” that drew praise from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“He’s talking about victimhood and personal responsibility as if people aren’t taking responsibility for their own actions,” Hostin continued. “It seems to me that the Republican Party has a real racism problem. Those aren’t my words. Those are the words of Michael Steele in 2018.”

“It seems to me that, you know, at this point Tim Scott is only polling at 1.8%,” Hostin said. “Donald Trump is still the frontrunner at 56.3%… and Ron DeSantis is at 19.4%. It just seems to me that black people make up 2% of registered Republicans, so it’s a very tiny fraction. I don’t know that the overwhelming base would vote for someone like Tim Scott.”

Haley and Scott both won multiple statewide elections in South Carolina since 2010, a conservative state that has not voted for a Democrat in the presidential race since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Scott defeated the son of longtime Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond in the primary race before winning his first term in the House of Representatives. Scott delivered the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s April 2021 address to a joint session of Congress and was labeled “Uncle Tim” by liberals on Twitter, which allowed the racist attack to trend.
