Though former President Barack Obama was noticeably missing from the initial surge of endorsements of Vice President Kamala Harris, a call finally came.
And it was, of course, touted by Harris in a new video in which she is seen walking while on the phone with Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
“I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” Michelle can be heard saying.
“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” the former president chimed in.
“Well, the— look, you’re a happy warrior,” Obama tells the vice president who is now the presumptive Democrat nominee after President Joe BIden’s stunning announcement Sunday that he was ending his re-election bid.
“Indeed,” Harris replied.
“And the country needs a happy warrior,” Michelle Obama added.
“Oh, my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me,” Harris responded. “I’m looking forward to doing this with the two of you, Doug and I both. And getting out there, being on the road.”
“But most of all, I just want to tell you the words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given over all these years mean more than I can express, so thank you both. It means so much. And we’re gonna have some fun with this too, aren’t we?” she added.
CNN reported that, according to a source, Obama and Harris “have been in touch regularly, and he is serving as a sounding board for her as he has over the 20 years they’ve known each other.”
The former president and first lady also issued a joint statement announcing their endorsement.
“But Kamala has more than a resume,” the statement said. “She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people.”
