Caller on popular hip-hop show says black voters may ‘need to switch parties’ if Trump improves economy

A black Detroit caller on “The Breakfast Club” named D’Angelo said Thursday that black Americans must be more strategic with their votes.

President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris included an increase in his support among black men, from 19% to 21%, according to Reuters. The caller, during a segment dubbed “Get It Off Your Chest,” asserted that Democrats have failed to deliver on their promises to black Americans and should be required to meet their demands in exchange for their votes.

LISTEN:

“Man, I just want to say, bro, that we not a monolith, you know what I’m saying? Black people think by theyselves … I feel like, at the end of the day, why we lost, I feel like it’s the Democratic Party is the reason why we lost, man,” D’Angelo said. “They promised us and promised us and promised us, but we never get nothing in return, man. And it’s a new day and a new age, and I feel like, you know what I’m saying, as black people, we should now demand everything we want before … we … give up our vote, man.”

“We’ve been sitting around too long and just giving, getting the crumbs. But now we need everything we ask for … for us to vote for ’em, man. And maybe, maybe it’s a good thing that Trump did win, because we can see if he really piggybacked off of [former President Barack] Obama’s economy, can he come bring us out of this economy? And we can see what the Republicans do,” he added. “So at the end of the day, if he do bring up the economy, we can look at it like maybe we just need to switch parties now or maybe do something different. That’s how I feel.”

Obama on Oct. 10 argued that Trump’s economy was “pretty good” due to his administration providing “75 straight months of job growth,” insisting that the president-elect deserves no credit. Trump, while on the “PBD Podcast,” accused Obama of being “angry” and “nasty” after watching a clip of the former president’s remarks.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, median household incomes surged under Trump, there was an all-time low poverty rate and unemployment rates at a 50-year low, according to a Trump White House press release. Nearly 55% of voters believed Trump would handle the economy “better” than Harris, according to a September New York Times/Siena College poll.

“The Breakfast Club” co-host Charlamagne Tha God on Wednesday asserted that economic factors and safety were main driving forces behind Trump’s victory, disputing the notion that he won just because of bigotry.

“I don’t think it’s fair to just chalk up Trump winning to racism, sexism, homophobia or antisemitism. Yes, he tapped into all of the worst things America has ever had to offer, and there are a lot of people who agree with his rhetoric and voted for him because of those reasons,” he said. “But I truly believe most people voted for him because they want more money in their pocket and they want to feel safe.”
