Trump praises ‘totally fascinating’ John Fetterman after unprecedented Mar-a-Lago meeting

by

President-elect Donald Trump found Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) “fascinating” after the Democrat made the unprecedented move of meeting with the incoming president at his Florida home.

One week before his inauguration, Trump met with the Pennsylvania lawmaker who became the first sitting Democratic U.S. senator to meet with him at his Palm Beach home, Mar-a-Lago. Fetterman was not named the “pope of Greenland” as he had joked but did cement his reputation for having no one be his “gatekeeper.”

“It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump told the Washington Examiner after meeting with the senator and his wife Gisele.

“He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful,” the incoming president added.

Fetterman expressed that it was only “reasonable” for him to meet with Trump.

“I think that one, he’s the president, or he will be officially,” he told CBS News. “And I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation — or invite someone to have a conversation — to have it. And no one is my gatekeeper.”

“I’ve been very clear that I have ongoing conversations with people that are going to have an impact on Pennsylvania and for the nation,” Fetterman said in a statement. “And I am a senator for Pennsylvania, not just for Democrats. I am a senator for everyone in Pennsylvania.”

Trump won Pennsylvania in the 2024 election after having lost the state to President Biden in 2020. Fetterman, who caught attention for his casual wardrobe and having a stroke before being elected in 2022. The lumbering Democrat who was also treated for depression is up for re-election in 2028.

When reporters caught up with Fetterman ahead of his trip to Florida, they asked what he hoped to accomplish by meeting with that Republican president-elect.

“I demand that I need to be made pope of Greenland,” the lawmaker joked.

“President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the senator for all Pennsylvanians — not just Democrats in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman said in a statement., “I’ve been clear that no one is my gatekeeper. I will meet with and have a conversation with anyone if it helps me deliver for Pennsylvania and the nation.”

Trump told the Washington Examiner that the two discussed Greenland and the Panama Canal and how these areas impact national security. They also discussed U.S. Steel, as Fetterman and his family live across from one of the nation’s oldest steel mills in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

“We had a great meeting. He was very impressive. His wife was with him, and she was really fantastic, too,” Trump said. “He really was impressive, and I’m glad I got to speak to him. And he loves Pennsylvania, and he loves our country.”
