‘Like a junkyard dog’: DeSantis pushes Florida lawmakers to take action on illegal immigration

by

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed he would fight like a “junkyard dog” to get policies enacted on illegal immigration in the state, urging Republican state lawmakers to take action.

The Republican leader warned lawmakers who balked at a special session of the Florida legislature set for next week to address the issue and move ahead with President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.

“It would be very, very hazardous politically,” DeSantis told reporters at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. “I have my constitutional authority to wield in this process and I will continue to wield it as appropriate so that we’re able to get the job done.”

“House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton pushed back, saying it was ‘premature” for legislators to tackle undocumented immigration and other issues so close to the March regular session,” Politico reported. “DeSantis has insisted that the special session is in line with what state voters and the Trump administration want when it comes to changing immigration policy in the state and nationwide.”

“It’s not premature. Now’s the time to act,” he said.

“We can’t drag our feet. We can’t wait for something to go into effect in July. We need something immediately and we need to get everything moving, and we need to do what we told the people that elected us that we would do,” DeSantis said.

“Imagine having to explain to a Republican voter if you’re a member of the Florida Legislature, ‘oh, you don’t want to help with this? We can just wait and do it months from now?’ Nobody is going to accept that,” DeSantis told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham. “Our folks want action now. We’ve got the momentum. We’ve got to get it done.”

At the same roundtable discussion, DeSantis schooled a reporter on the word games used to describe those who have violated U.S. law to enter the country illegally.

When asked about the “undocumented immigrants,” DeSantis took a clear stand against any effort to “water down” the terminology as he explained the key differences.

“The federal government has made clear that the statutory term is not undocumented immigrants; they’re illegal aliens. That’s the statutory term and that’s what it is,” DeSantis said after the reporter asked about “undocumented immigrants.”

“Undocumented, it’s like if I get in my car and I forget my wallet. Okay, I don’t have my document, my driver’s license on me. But I still have a right to drive. I just made a mistake,” the governor added.
