‘Really bothers me’: Chris Cuomo rebukes Dems for performative opposition to Trump tariff threats

NewsNation host Chris Cuomo criticized Democrats on Monday for their performative outrage to President Donald Trump’s tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China, implemented to pressure the nations into taking action against the trafficking of synthetic opioids and illegal migrants across U.S. borders.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both raised concerns about Trump’s tariffs spiking prices if enacted. Cuomo, on “CUOMO” said “everybody knew” Trump’ tariffs were unlikely to take effect and accused Democrats like Schumer and Ocasio-Cortez of playing political games after ignoring inflation concerns for years under the previous administration.

“What really bothers me about all of it is, with these tariffs, everybody knew they weren’t going to be operative in all likelihood,” Cuomo said. “Certainly, Democrats like Schumer knew it was a ploy, and yet he had to have his own ruse.”

Cuomo then played a clip of Schumer holding a Corona beer and an avocado while warning that Trump’s tariffs would make them more expensive.

“You know, it’s always good when you have props. Look, same mistake AOC made when she warned that Trump’s threat of tariffs against Colombia would make your coffee more expensive,” Cuomo said after playing the clip. “Look, if they want to give a damn about inflation, they should have done something over the last few years, okay? And they didn’t. They just denied it. The game of showing that the other party is worse ain’t getting it done anymore.”

“That should be a message for the left and the right. Fix. Show you have better ideas to fix. Trump rubs plenty of people the wrong way, and he often says things poorly and in ways that abuse norms. But you know what? We had an election about that. And he won,” he continued. “So just judge what he does and save the style points for the rabble on social media. Make it the noise. You want to be part of it? Be part of it. But it’s not what matters. How you feel about how he is is meaningless to me and my family.”

Cuomo also praised Trump for influencing Canada and Mexico to commit on Monday to doing more to secure their respective borders with the United States in exchange for a 30-day pause on the 25% tariffs Trump levied on both countries.

“You know what Schumer should be saying right now? ‘It worked. And I have some ideas for what else needs to change with Canada and Mexico while you got ’em at the table for this 30-day window,’” he said. “Oh, and that’s the next one: ‘Only 30 days. Countdown of the 30 days.’ What do you think’s going to happen at the end of the 30 days? You think we’re going to be back at the brink of tariffs? I don’t think so.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Trudeau pledged to invest $1.3 billion in securing Canada’s border with the U.S. and appoint a “Fentanyl Czar” to oversee a $200 million initiative to counter the trafficking of the drug. He also postponed his country’s 25% retaliatory tariff.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also vowed to deploy 10,000 National Guard soldiers to America’s southern border to help stem the flow of drugs and illegal immigration.
