Democrats’ steaming pile of hypocrisy over Trump’s tariff plans and efforts to restore American economic independence were hot topics during Monday’s “Bo Snerdley’s Rush Hour” broadcast on WABC radio.
It all started with Slick Willy Bill Clinton. In an examination of how globalization “exploded in earnest” during the tenure of President Bill Clinton at the White House, Bo noted how that time period is “vital to understanding everything happening now” under Trump’s presidency.
As China was poised to be admitted into the World Trade Organization, which happened in December 2001, then-President Clinton spoke about how the WTO would “move China in the right direction.”
“Everything he said was wrong!” Bo announced after playing a clip of Clinton’s speech from March 2000.
“It will advance the goals America has worked for in China for the past three decades and, of course, it will advance our own economic interests,” Clinton said at the time, contending that the agreement was like a “one-way street,” requiring China to open its markets to the U.S. and other nations.
“All we do is agree to maintain the present access which China enjoys,” Clinton said.
“Chinese tariffs, from telecommunications products to automobiles to agriculture, will fall by half or more over just five years,” he added. “For the first time, our companies will be able to sell and distribute products in China made by workers here in America without being forced to relocate manufacturing to China, sell through the Chinese government, or transfer valuable technology — for the first time. We’ll be able to export products without exporting jobs.”
Bo drove home the reality that Clinton’s aspirational remarks all turned out to be wrong regarding trade with China.
“China played Bill Clinton. China played the Democrat Party. China played the world,” he exclaimed, pointing out how America is “locked out” of so many markets, in addition to China’s.
“But this is what sparked this massive wave of globalization: China’s admittance into the World Trade Organization, where they have never, ever played by the rules,” Bo said. “Every single thing that Bill Clinton promised Americans and the world about admitting China into the World Trade Organization has turned out to be a complete lie!”
But the problems are not limited to trade with China, as Bo noted how American ranchers and others have been “kicked in the behind” for decades by empty promises made on trade and tariffs.
“Farmers, ranchers fisherman that have gone out of business, generational businesses closed down over these promises that were made, never kept and the same people now that are invested so heavily in Wall Street…while these people are struggling for their lives,” an exasperated Bo said, before turning attention to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ remarks from 2015 and 2019 blasting the present trade agreements which he said needed to be renegotiated.
“You need agreements that work for the American middle class, ” the Vermont senator said at the time, sounding very much like President Trump.
