Music icon Billy Joel recently encountered a pedicab driver in New York City who was enthusiastically playing one of his songs, much to the driver’s surprise.
A video shared on Joel’s social media platforms this week captured the moment the pedicab, carrying two tourists through Manhattan, approached Joel’s vehicle. The distinct sound of Joel’s 1976 hit, “New York State of Mind,” was audible from the pedicab’s sound system.
Initially, the driver did not recognize Joel, exclaiming, “OK, next time!”
Upon realizing who was in the car, the driver’s reaction shifted dramatically. “Whoa!” he shouted, extending his hand. “You see we are playing you, man. Can I take a picture with you, please? Hey, man. Big fan.”
One of the passengers also expressed admiration, shouting, “We love you,” while the other attempted to capture a photo. “How are you feeling?” the passenger inquired.
Joel’s official Instagram account shared the video of the encounter with the caption: “We’re in a New York State of Mind…always.”
Earlier this year, Joel surprised his fans by announcing he was dealing with a brain disorder following a fall he experienced on stage at the Mohegan Sun resort in Connecticut back in February. This announcement came after he revealed his health condition.
In footage recorded by a fan, Joel is seen tossing his microphone stand into the audience as he lost his footing and fell backward. The video can be viewed here.
Fans of Billy Joel can anticipate the upcoming second part of the singer’s new HBO documentary series.
HBO premiered the first part of “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” on July 18. This two-part documentary chronicles the musician’s career and includes interviews with Joel himself, as well as his close circle of friends, family, and professional associates.
Part 2 of “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” is set to air on Friday, July 25, at 8 p.m. ET, just one week after the debut of the first part.
The documentary will be broadcast live on HBO and will also be accessible for streaming on HBO Max.
