Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund is pushing back hard against what he calls an attempt by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to “rewrite history” regarding the events of January 6, 2021. Sund, who led the U.S. Capitol Police during the chaos of that day, is publicly calling out Pelosi for her recent social media post that blames President Donald Trump for the delayed deployment of the National Guard—a claim Sund flatly rejects.
On Monday, Pelosi took to X, alleging that Trump “delayed deploying the National Guard on January 6th when our Capitol was under violent attack and lives were at stake.” She went further, suggesting Trump’s recent move to activate the D.C. National Guard was merely a ploy to “distract from his incompetent mishandling of tariffs, health care, education and immigration — just to name a few blunders.”
But Sund, who has firsthand knowledge of how January 6 unfolded behind the scenes, is calling Pelosi’s comments not only misleading but politically motivated.
“Ma’am, it is long past time to be honest with the American people,” Sund wrote in a pointed and fact-filled rebuttal. He clarified that he had made multiple urgent requests for National Guard assistance—both days before and during the Capitol breach—but those requests were repeatedly denied or stalled by Pelosi’s own office.
“On January 3, I requested National Guard assistance, but your Sergeant at Arms denied it,” Sund stated. “Under federal law (2 U.S.C. §1970), I was prohibited from calling them in without specific approval.”
Sund also revealed that on that same day, the Pentagon—specifically Carol Corbin—offered National Guard support, which he had to decline due to legal constraints. He emphasized that the authority to approve such assistance lay not with him, but with Congressional leadership, including Speaker Pelosi.
During the chaos of January 6, Sund says his hands were tied yet again. “While the Capitol was under attack and despite my repeated calls, your Sergeant at Arms again denied my urgent requests for over 70 agonizing minutes, ‘running it up the chain’ for your approval.”
The former police chief went on to contrast Pelosi’s refusal to authorize Guard deployment when it was most needed with her later, swift decision to erect fencing topped with concertina wire and flood the Capitol grounds with thousands of armed National Guard troops—once the political optics shifted in her favor.
The facts Sund laid out directly contradict Pelosi’s attempts to shift blame to Trump. Despite the media narrative that continues to shield Democratic leadership from accountability, Sund’s testimony highlights a reality many conservatives have long stated: the failure to secure the Capitol was not due to Trump’s inaction but to a politically driven breakdown in the chain of command overseen by Pelosi herself.
Rather than owning up to her role, Pelosi is once again using the January 6 tragedy to launch political attacks on Trump and distract from the failures of the Biden administration, which fumbled key issues like the border crisis, inflation, and global instability.
Here is the letter Mayor Bowser wrote on J5 rejecting Trump’s offer to have Nat Guard at J6 rally to keep the peace. Kash Patel used the letter as evidence in the case in CO trying to remove Trump from the 2024 ballot. Bowser even posted the letter herself on X that same day with… pic.twitter.com/QoFyyKxCFK

Pelosi is a lier, this is something ever clear minded person knows. She has lied about January 6th from day one. She is responsible for the security, and planed the whole thing. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Pelosi’s office was guarded by a really nasty pit bull dyke. I doubt Pelosi ever saw the requests.
