‘Pete and Bobby challenge’: Hegseth and JFK Jr face off in Pentagon PT competition

In a high-energy, patriotic display of personal discipline and leadership, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth took part in a physical fitness showdown at the Pentagon. The event, dubbed the “Pete and Bobby Challenge,” signals a renewed national commitment to health and strength, both individually and as a country. The challenge, shared with Fox News Digital, aligns with the Trump administration’s broader effort to promote wellness, military readiness, and personal responsibility.

Standing before active-duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, Kennedy and Hegseth each pushed themselves to complete 50 pull-ups and 100 push-ups in under five minutes—a feat designed to test grit, endurance, and mental fortitude. Dressed in his signature workout gear of jeans and a T-shirt, Kennedy explained, “We had our big Pete and Bobby challenge today. Fifty pull-ups. One hundred push-ups. You try to get under five minutes.”

While Hegseth edged out Kennedy with a time of approximately 5:25, he acknowledged that the real winners were the young service members in the room. Some Marines completed the challenge in under four minutes, and one particularly fit Marine managed it in less than three—a testament to the enduring physical excellence of America’s fighting force.

The friendly competition wasn’t just about physical prowess. It launched a broader campaign led by Kennedy called Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), echoing President Trump’s longstanding emphasis on restoring American strength from the ground up. This movement encourages citizens to ditch processed foods in favor of whole, natural nutrition, while urging a return to regular exercise and discipline in everyday life.

The urgency of this campaign is underscored by troubling statistics. A recent report revealed that nearly two-thirds of the U.S. military is considered overweight—a fact Hegseth blasted on social media. “Completely unacceptable,” he wrote on X.  “This is what happens when standards are IGNORED — and this is what we are changing. REAL fitness & weight standards are here. We will be FIT, not FAT.”

Trump’s influence is at the heart of the movement. Both Kennedy and Hegseth credited the president with inspiring their initiative. “It was President Trump who inspired us to do this,” Kennedy said in the video. “This is the beginning of our tour, challenging Americans to get back in shape, eat better, but also, you need to get out and exercise.”

The challenge didn’t end there. Hegseth and Kennedy extended an open invitation to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, daring him to complete the same grueling challenge under the five-minute benchmark. “Secretary Duffy, you’re invited to do the Pete and Bobby challenge. Can you do it in under five minutes?” Hegseth said with a grin.

This call to fitness is part of a larger vision President Trump has championed from day one. During his term, Trump reinstated the Presidential Fitness Test—an iconic benchmark of youth health and athleticism that had been retired under the Obama administration. Through executive order, Trump also revitalized the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, directing it to promote school-based programs and reinstate the prestigious Presidential Fitness Award.

“Thank you, President Trump, for setting the example,” Hegseth declared. “Presidential physical fitness. Make America Healthy Again. Fit, not fat. We’re going to have a war-fighting force, young men and women who are prepared to defend the nation. We’re doing it as a team. Join us.”

As America faces rising health concerns and threats from abroad, this administration is making one thing clear: a strong nation begins with strong citizens. From the Pentagon to the playground, the message is simple—personal fitness is patriotic.
