Vanity Fair staffers melt down over proposed Melania Trump cover: ‘I will walk out the motherf–king door’

by

Vanity Fair, once a beacon of sophisticated journalism and fashion commentary, now finds itself at the center of a new cultural firestorm. Why? Because its new global editorial director, Mark Guiducci, has reportedly floated the idea of featuring First Lady Melania Trump on the cover of the iconic magazine—a move that has sent the publication’s more progressive staffers into an outright foot-stomping frenzy.

According to Semafor, Guiducci is seeking to make bold changes in his role at the Conde Nast-owned outlet, and including Melania Trump, a former model and one of the most elegant First Ladies in American history, would certainly be a strong editorial statement. But the backlash has been swift and aggressive from the magazine’s increasingly left-leaning editorial ranks.

One editor, apparently unable to stomach the thought of a gorgeous conservative woman gracing the cover of a magazine whined, “I will walk out the motherf–king door, and half my staff will follow me. We are not going to normalize this despot and his wife; we’re just not going to do it. We’re going to stand for what’s right,” according to the Daily Mail. The unnamed staffer even reportedly went so far as to suggest they’d rather “bag groceries at Trader Joe’s” than be associated with such a decision.

Once a space for artistry, creativity, and style, publications like Vanity Fair and Vogue have increasingly morphed into ideological platforms, alienating large swaths of readers who dare to think differently.

Not everyone in the Vanity Fair offices, however, shares the extreme sentiment. Another staffer suggested the outrage is largely performative. “It’s all talk,” the employee stated. “If they put her on the cover, people will protest and gripe about it, but I don’t see anyone quitting such a prestigious job over that.”

That source added a dose of realism: “Honestly, there will be people who push back, but it’s ultimately Mark’s decision. He’s the one who will sink or swim over that choice, not the rest of us.”

Melania Trump has always been an enigma to the legacy media—graceful, composed, and fiercely private, she’s refused to play into the typical first lady media narrative. Despite her high-fashion background and previous magazine covers—including a February 2017 Vanity Fair Mexico cover—she was notably excluded from Vogue and Vanity Fair during President Donald Trump’s first term. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama was celebrated on the cover of Vogue not once, but three times during her tenure in the White House.

This disparity hasn’t gone unnoticed. Conservatives have long criticized the media’s clear bias when it comes to how first ladies are treated, depending on their party affiliation. The refusal to feature Melania—an actual fashion model—during her years as First Lady was seen by many as petty and politically motivated.

For her part, Melania Trump has taken the snub in stride, proving once again that she is unbothered by the media’s double standards. “Look, I’ve been there on the covers — on the cover of Vogue, on the covers of many magazines before,” she said in a 2020 interview with Fox News. “We have so many other important things to do than to be on the cover of any magazine. I think that life would not change for anybody if I’m on the cover.”

If Guiducci is serious about charting a new course, he may find that honoring grace and achievement—regardless of political affiliation—might just be the boldest move of all.

  1. Melania Trump’s picture on the cover will add class to the rag.
