President Donald J. Trump has announced that Rudy Giuliani, the storied former Mayor of New York City and longtime Trump ally, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The announcement comes just days after Giuliani sustained serious injuries in a car accident while assisting a domestic violence victim.
In a statement posted to his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump hailed Giuliani as “the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot.” Trump added that the date and location of the award ceremony would be disclosed soon.
“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani… will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump wrote. “Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The announcement follows a harrowing ordeal for Giuliani, who is currently hospitalized in New Hampshire after a serious car accident on August 30. According to a spokesperson, the accident occurred shortly after Giuliani had pulled over to assist a woman who was a victim of domestic violence.
“Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident,” the spokesperson said. “He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety.”
Shortly after re-entering his vehicle, Giuliani’s car was struck from behind at a high speed, causing multiple injuries. He was transported to a trauma center in Manchester, where doctors diagnosed him with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple contusions, and injuries to his left arm and leg.
Medical staff expect Giuliani to remain in the hospital for two to three days, and he will be required to wear a brace during his recovery.
Despite the ordeal, Giuliani remains resilient. “The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” the spokesperson added—referencing Giuliani’s courageous leadership during the September 11 terrorist attacks, when he famously coordinated New York City’s emergency response amid unprecedented chaos.
Giuliani’s longtime business partner and licensed nurse Maria Ryan has been overseeing his medical treatment. “He’s getting further tests and stabilization of his injuries,” she stated.
According to the full statement on his condition, Giuliani received immediate care, with his medical team and associates promptly arriving at the hospital. The report confirmed a fractured vertebrae and numerous lacerations, but emphasized that his prognosis remains optimistic.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution” to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or cultural endeavors. For many conservatives, Giuliani’s receipt of this honor is long overdue.
As Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, Giuliani presided over a dramatic reduction in crime, cleaning up the streets with bold law-and-order reforms. His leadership during 9/11 earned him the nickname “America’s Mayor.” In recent years, he has remained a vocal advocate for the America First agenda and a trusted confidant of President Trump.
