During an impressive high-level meeting with Big Tech leaders this week, President Donald Trump found himself at the receiving end of glowing praise from one of Silicon Valley’s own—Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
What truly caught the attention of political observers, however, was Trump’s lighthearted exchange involving Brin’s girlfriend, whom the former president referred to as a “really wonderful MAGA girlfriend.”
The moment unfolded during a roundtable event where Trump, known for his longstanding criticism of Big Tech censorship and corporate overreach, engaged directly with Brin and other tech executives. Turning to Brin with a smirk, Trump remarked, “Sergey, you were saying a lot at the Oval Office. I figured you’re somebody that likes to speak with his really wonderful MAGA girlfriend.”
Brin’s girlfriend, clearly delighted, raised her hands in the air in celebration. Trump then asked, “So, would you like to say a few words?”
Brin, smiling, turned to her and said, “Well babe, do you want to say something?”
The girlfriend didn’t hold back in her admiration for the president. “Truly every time I’m here or in your presence, I’m so grateful, so thank you,” she said. “It’s like, I can’t believe it every time, like the inauguration here. I think you’re doing amazing work.”
“Thank you very much,” Trump replied, graciously accepting the praise.
But the compliments didn’t stop there. Brin himself expressed gratitude toward Trump for his hardline foreign policy moves—particularly regarding Venezuela. He specifically applauded Trump’s tough stance against socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro.
“Thank you for applying pressure to Venezuela,” Brin said. “I think that’s phenomenal for an American president, actually, to be applying pressure there in Venezuela and then hopefully in Cuba and so forth. So there’s a lot of civil rights work that you’re leading we didn’t get a chance to mention.”
In a significant departure from the typical Silicon Valley narrative, Brin also lauded the Trump administration’s approach to artificial intelligence. Rather than stifling innovation with regulation, he acknowledged that Trump’s policies have helped American tech companies remain competitive globally.
“The fact that your administration is supporting our companies instead of fighting with them is hugely important,” said Brin. “Obviously, it’s a global race, and I think we’re at the cusp where these AI models are about to become profoundly useful… incredible utility, incredible productivity. So very grateful for your administration’s support.”
This warm moment between the tech mogul and the former president may come as a surprise to those familiar with their rocky history. Just last year, Trump had publicly threatened to take action against Google, accusing the company of political bias and acting irresponsibly.
“Google has been very bad. They’ve been very irresponsible,” Trump said at the time. “And I have a feeling that Google’s going to be close to shut down, because I don’t think Congress is going to take it. I really don’t think so. Google has to be careful.”
Despite the friction in the past, Thursday’s meeting marks what could be a significant turning point in the relationship between conservative leadership and tech elites. With MAGA sentiment clearly winning unexpected fans—even in Silicon Valley—it seems Trump’s America First message continues to gain unlikely ground.
