In a move that’s raising serious questions about how far the radical Left is allowed to go before facing consequences, DC Comics has abruptly canceled its newly launched “Red Hood” comic series. The cancellation came swiftly after the series’ controversial writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, made horrific comments appearing to celebrate the violent death of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a leading voice for young conservatives, was tragically shot and killed during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The shooter remains at large, and authorities are actively investigating.
Not long after the shocking news broke, screenshots began circulating from Felker-Martin’s Bluesky account, where the author allegedly made vile and hateful remarks about Kirk. Among the comments attributed to her were, “Thoughts and prayers you Nazi bitch” and “Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie Kirk.”
The backlash was immediate—and justified.
DC Comics issued a notice to retailers confirming they were canceling orders of “Red Hood #2” and “Red Hood #3” and even going so far as to credit retailers for copies of the already released “Red Hood #1”, whether or not they had sold the books. This rare move appears to reflect the seriousness with which the publisher is treating the matter.
In a statement to TheWrap, a DC spokesperson said:
“At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”
While DC stopped short of directly blaming the cancellation on the comments about Kirk, it’s hard to ignore the timing. Sources familiar with the company’s strict social media policy noted that any post promoting violence or unrest would constitute a clear violation.
Felker-Martin, a transgender author with a well-documented history of inflammatory rhetoric against conservatives, had already shifted her online presence from Twitter to the smaller social media platform Bluesky last year. However, following the disturbing posts about Kirk, her Bluesky account was suspended.
The now-canceled “Red Hood” series reimagined the classic Batman anti-hero Jason Todd in a gritty New Orleans-style city called “New Angelique,” where he teamed up with the Huntress to solve a murder mystery. But with Felker-Martin at the helm, the project now finds itself dead in the water.
Many on the Right are now questioning why Felker-Martin was hired in the first place, given her history of incendiary public statements and openly hostile views toward conservative voices. Some critics argue that DC Comics, like many institutions dominated by progressive ideology, is only taking action now because they got caught—not out of genuine commitment to civility or respect.
Felker-Martin’s book publisher, Tor, has yet to respond to the controversy or indicate whether it plans to take action regarding her future publications.
