Emmy-winning actress Jennifer Coolidge targeted over Instagram follow of Charlie Kirk

Emmy-winning actress Jennifer Coolidge, long hailed as a pop culture icon and LGBTQ favorite, is now facing a torrent of backlash from progressive corners of the internet—not for anything she said, but for something as simple as a social media follow.

The controversy began when it was discovered that Coolidge, 64, had been following conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on Instagram. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent advocate for conservative youth activism, was tragically assassinated last week while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Despite his tragic death, left-wing activists have seized the opportunity to smear both Kirk and anyone even loosely associated with him.

A viral post on X by the account @oocwhitelotus shared a screenshot showing Coolidge among Kirk’s Instagram followers. The reaction from progressives was swift and unforgiving.

“I’m done with Jennifer Coolidge after this smh,” one user declared. Another pleaded, “Ummm please tell me this isn’t real.”

Coolidge’s apparent offense? Following a conservative voice—one who, while controversial in leftist circles, has been a champion for free speech, traditional values, and the pro-life movement.

Critics were quick to point out the hypocrisy of the outrage. Many noted that Coolidge’s Instagram activity includes follows for figures across the political spectrum, including prominent Democrats such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, and First Lady Jill Biden.

Yet that nuance was lost on the woke mob. One X user lamented, “The gays have lost another white blonde middle-aged woman,” while another wrote, “She was funnier when I didn’t know she was a Charlie Kirk fan.”

Despite the online outrage, others defended the actress, noting the absurdity of equating a social media follow with full political endorsement.

“Following someone on social media doesn’t imply agreement or support,” one user reasoned. Another added, “This is literally nonsense. I follow people I cannot stand all the time because I still want to know what awful things they’re saying.”

There’s also speculation that Coolidge may not even manage her own Instagram account. “Jennifer probably doesn’t even use her own Insta,” a fan commented. “It’s probably her PR team.”

As of Monday morning, Coolidge no longer follows Kirk, a move that appears to be more about avoiding the noise than making a political statement.

Meanwhile, the Emmy Awards themselves, where Coolidge appeared Sunday night in a stunning black off-the-shoulder gown by Christian Siriano, took a backseat in the media narrative. Rather than her performance, jokes, or appearance, the conversation centered on her social media habits.

While on stage, Coolidge delivered a characteristically humorous monologue, joking about her role in HBO’s The White Lotus, and even poking fun at herself with an Ozempic reference:

“We were all supposed to go on a trip to Ibiza and I found out I wasn’t included,” she joked. “The only reason I knew that was because Elizabeth Debicki and I have the same Ozempic dealer. At least hers is working!”

But her wit and comedic charm weren’t enough to shield her from the wrath of online activists.

Jennifer Coolidge hasn’t made any public statement about the backlash, nor should she have to. In a free country, following someone on social media shouldn’t be a career-ending offense.
