Cleveland fire chief suspended over Facebook post in wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination

by

CLEVELAND, OH — Cleveland Fire Chief Anthony P. Luke has been placed on paid administrative leave following a personal social media post deemed “insensitive” and “incendiary” by Mayor Justin Bibb.

The controversy stems from a now-deleted Facebook post shared by Luke shortly after the tragic killing of 31-year-old conservative leader Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down during a speaking engagement at a Utah college campus on September 10. Kirk, a father of two and founder of Turning Point USA, was known for his outspoken conservative views and advocacy for free market capitalism and constitutional rights.

According to Fox 8 News, the post in question featured a cartoon of Republican elephants kneeling before a golden rifle, with one saying, “Bring out the next sacrifice!!” The imagery, interpreted by critics as a critique of conservative gun culture, was quickly denounced by city leadership.

Mayor Justin Bibb wasted no time condemning the post. “This post romanticizes gun violence, a matter far too serious in a city where we mourn too many families every week, too many lives cut short, and too many children denied safe sleep in their beds,” Bibb stated in a formal announcement.

Bibb went on to justify his decision by emphasizing what he sees as higher standards for those in public service. “I firmly believe in free speech, and the First Amendment protects every individual’s right to express opinions — even those that are unpopular, provocative, or difficult to hear,” Bibb said. “But with rights come responsibilities, especially for those who hold positions of public trust and leadership.”

He concluded: “Chief Luke’s post crossed the line. It was insensitive, it was incendiary, and it did not reflect the values of compassion, unity, and safety that I strive to stand for—and that every public safety leader in this city should embody. Therefore, I am, effective immediately, placing Chief Luke on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.”
