NHL team apologizes for ‘pro-ICE’ jumbotron message on Hispanic Heritage Night

by

On Saturday night, during a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the San Jose Sharks found themselves at the center of a political firestorm after a message on the arena’s Jumbotron read, “SJ SHARKS FANS LOVE ICE !! GET’EM BOYZ !”

The message, which appeared during the first intermission of the team’s annual Hispanic heritage celebration—dubbed “Los Tiburones Night”—was quickly met with criticism from some in the crowd. A few attendees reportedly booed in reaction to what they interpreted as a reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency often targeted by progressive activists.

While the phrase “Love ICE” could easily be interpreted as an innocent play on words in an ice hockey arena, some chose to see it as politically charged—illustrating a growing trend where even light-hearted messages are scrutinized through a hyper-political lens.

The team later issued an apology during the game, stating that the message was “externally submitted” and had been “inadvertently displayed” on the in-arena scoreboard. In a statement posted to X, the organization said:

“During the first intermission of tonight’s game, an offensively worded message which had been externally submitted was inadvertently displayed on the in-arena scoreboard. Sharks Sports & Entertainment deeply regrets that this message, which does not meet our organization’s values, was not detected during our standard review process.”

The organization emphasized that it is working to identify the origin of the message and to strengthen internal screening processes.

The apology did little to calm criticism from some on social media, who demanded accountability. “Anybody and everybody associated with this message, from the top down, should be fired yesterday! Go get em boyz!!” one user wrote, ironically echoing the message in question. Another added, “On Los Tiburones night too, sheesh. Tough look.”

Lifelong fan Jessica Clark expressed disappointment, telling CNN: “They’re my favorite team — I even have tattoos — but this was something that should’ve been caught.”

The Sharks ended the night with a 3–0 loss to the Penguins, but it was the scoreboard controversy—not the shutout—that dominated postgame conversation.
