Elementary school principal sides with teacher who simulated Charlie Kirk shot, calls her a victim

In Chicago, the tension over ideological bias in our schools took a dramatic turn when a teacher at Nathan Hale Elementary School became the subject of nationwide outrage. The teacher, identified as Lucy Martinez, reportedly works for the Chicago Public Schools district and was captured on video delivering a gesture that many interpreted as mocking the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. She raised a finger to her neck and mimicked a gun-trigger motion while saying “bang, bang” during a protest organized by the No Kings movement.

Kirk, a prominent conservative youth leader, was fatally shot in the neck last month at a speaking event on the campus of Utah Valley University. The video of Martinez’s actions circulated widely on social media and triggered widespread calls for her termination. Rather than address the gesture itself, the school’s principal, Dawn Iles‑Gomez, opted to frame Martinez as the victim. In a letter to parents, Iles-Gomez wrote:

“We were recently made aware of social media posts with language that resembles a potential threat to a staff member. We take all potential threats extremely seriously to ensure the safety of our school community.”

She also notified that the Chicago Police Department and the CPS Office of Safety and Security were involved in an investigation.

Notably missing: any acknowledgement of the teacher’s mocking gesture or whether any disciplinary action was taken. The principal’s letter made no mention of Martinez’s behavior. The school also reportedly took down its website and deleted its social media accounts in the wake of the backlash.

Meanwhile, calls for accountability have only grown louder. Parents and taxpayers are demanding clarity on whether someone entrusted with shaping young minds should be publicly celebrated for mimicking political violence. Some are asking: if the roles were reversed, would we see the same leniency?

As of now, there is no confirmed public record that Martinez has been fired or disciplined.
