Amon‑Ra St. Brown knew exactly who was watching. During Sunday’s game between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders, St. Brown broke into the so-called “Trump Dance” celebration, deliberately glancing toward the suite where Donald J. Trump was in attendance.
The sequence unfolded late in the first quarter when St. Brown hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff, giving Detroit a 14-3 lead. The receiver dove over the goal line, rose up, pointed toward the sky, then toward the stands—and proceeded with the stylized dance moves, joined by three teammates before returning to the sideline.
President Trump was present at the game in Landover, Maryland, taking part in the NFL’s “Salute to Service” ceremony honoring U.S. military veterans. He watched the action from a stadium suite, accompanied by House Speaker Mike Johnson and members of his cabinet, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. During the broadcast on Fox, Trump appeared alongside play-by-play announcers Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma for about eight and a half minutes.
It’s worth noting that President Trump became the first sitting U.S. president since Jimmy Carter in 1978 to attend a regular-season NFL game, and earlier in the year he became the first sitting president ever to attend the Super Bowl.
The “Trump Dance” itself has grown into a recognizable celebratory move in sports, inspired by President Trump’s own gestures at rallies during his 2024 campaign. Athletes across football, soccer and mixed martial arts have adopted it as a pop-cultural gesture. For example, St. Brown’s Detroit Lions teammates Za’Darius Smith and Malcolm Rodriguez have used the move previously, and so have other players such as Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers and Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders.
