Trump admin torpedoes Candace Owens’ claims in TPUSA firestorm

by

The Trump administration’s Treasury Department has quietly stepped in to deflate Candace Owens’ explosive accusations that Turning Point USA—still reeling from Charlie Kirk’s assassination—was entangled in financial misconduct.

Owens, who has spent weeks launching grenades at the group once aligned with her politically, ignited a firestorm by insisting that TPUSA was under IRS investigation. She went so far as to urge donors to pull their money. “I am making a personal plea to every well-meaning person who donated to this Godforsaken organization to request a refund,” she told her massive online audience.

Her claims triggered panic among some supporters—panic strong enough that refunds were demanded from the organization now led by Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk.

But behind the scenes, federal officials were already preparing a rebuttal.

According to a private Treasury Department letter obtained by CBS News, the government formally assured Erika Kirk that no part of Turning Point’s nonprofit network is under IRS scrutiny. That includes all four related tax-exempt groups:

  • Turning Point USA Inc.

  • Turning Point Action Inc.

  • Turning Point Endowment Inc.

  • America’s Turning Point Inc.

Each entity, Treasury confirmed, filed its required 990 forms “on time.”

A senior Treasury official, speaking to CBS News, defended the agency’s decision to provide clarity: “The IRS is able to provide this type of information upon request by the taxpayer.” But the same official also appeared to sympathize with Erika Kirk, adding: “And in this case, it’s hideous that malicious lies and smears obligated her to make the request.”

Inside the organization, frustration is spilling over. Blake Neff, producer of The Charlie Kirk Show, dismissed the allegations in blunt terms. Owens’ claims, he said, were part of a narrative that simply doesn’t match the books.

Neff insisted that accusations of multimillion-dollar fraud are baseless: “Claims of financial impropriety and fraud at Turning Point adding up into the millions of dollars – which, again, is not true.”

He went on to describe Charlie Kirk’s tight control of TPUSA finances during his lifetime: “Charlie made sure the organization was audited by a third party every year. He personally reviewed, and he signed off on every expense report and literally every single bill paid by the organization – down to a single United States dollar. We have never missed a 990 deadline.”

The controversy lands at a precarious moment. Erika Kirk, now head of an organization with over 3,500 high-school chapters, 900 college chapters, and 250,000 members, has been attempting to stabilize TPUSA after her husband’s death. The group remains deeply tied to President Donald Trump, who credited Kirk’s youth outreach efforts with helping him secure young voters in the 2024 election.

Candace Owens, for her part, shows no signs of backing down. With more than 30 million followers across platforms, her criticisms carry enormous reach. To her supporters, she is exposing corruption; to TPUSA’s defenders, she is tearing down a conservative institution at its most vulnerable moment.

The letter from Treasury does not address motives, feuds, or factional rivalries—only the narrow question of IRS investigations. On that point, at least, the government has spoken.

Whether Owens will accept the answer is another matter entirely.
