As the celebrity media machine whirs into overdrive, actress Melissa Gilbert is making one thing clear: she’s standing with her husband and refusing to be dragged into a public spectacle before the facts are fully tested in court.
Gilbert, best known for her wholesome “Little House on the Prairie” roots, has released a statement through her representative pushing back against online rumors, viral misinformation, and even AI-generated deepfakes falsely attributed to her name—all while voicing quiet but firm support for her embattled husband, actor and director Timothy Busfield.
Busfield was taken into custody Tuesday after voluntarily turning himself in to New Mexico authorities. He is currently being held at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, where he faces two counts of Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor (child under 13) and one count of Child Abuse stemming from allegations tied to the 2022 filming of The Cleaning Lady, a television series he directed.
The accusations are serious. According to Variety, one boy told an investigator last fall that Busfield touched his “private areas” when he was seven and again when he was eight while on set. Another child alleged that Busfield kissed him on the face and “would tickle and caress the heads of boys.”
Despite the gravity of the claims, Gilbert has chosen restraint over performative outrage—a move increasingly rare in today’s cancel-first, investigate-later culture.
“Melissa Gilbert is not making public statements at this time,” her representative told the Daily Mail. “Any purported ‘statements’ circulating online – including AI-generated deepfakes of her ‘breaking her silence’ – should not be treated as coming from her. She is honoring the request of Tim’s lawyers not to speak publicly while the legal process unfolds.”
The representative added: “During this period, her focus is on supporting and caring for their very large family, as they navigate this moment. Melissa stands with and supports her husband and will address the public at an appropriate time. We ask that their privacy be respected.”
While Hollywood insiders and social media mobs rush to judgment, Busfield’s legal team is painting a very different picture—one that raises uncomfortable questions about motives, credibility, and revenge.
“This morning, Tim voluntarily appeared before New Mexico authorities after traveling across the country to confront these false and deeply troubling allegations,” Busfield’s attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein, told the Daily Mail. “He is innocent and is determined to clear his name.”
Stein went further, alleging that one accusation may have been fueled not by truth, but by bitterness.
“[A]fter her son was terminated from the show, the boy’s mother vowed to ‘get her revenge against Timothy Busfield,’” the lawyer said. “What followed appears to be a calculated effort to construct a case, driven by animus not fact, despite prior investigations finding no evidence of wrongdoing.”
That claim is backed, Stein says, by an independent investigation commissioned by Warner Bros. Christina McGovern, an outside investigator, previously reviewed the allegations and found no corroboration.
“I conducted an independent and thorough investigation of all allegations known to the Studio at the time,” McGovern stated. “Warner Bros. gave me full discretion as to my investigation.”
Her conclusion was unequivocal: “Based on what was alleged, and all evidence gathered, including multiple witness statements, I found no corroborating evidence that Mr. Busfield engaged in inappropriate conduct or that he was ever alone with the twins on set.”
Busfield himself has forcefully denied the accusations. In a video statement obtained by TMZ, he rejected the claims outright.
“They’re all lies, and I did not do anything,” Busfield said. “I’m gonna fight it with a great team, and I know I’m going to be exonerated. I know I am, because this is all so wrong and all lies.”
The arrest warrant states that the investigation began in November 2024, after staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital contacted police with concerns that children were being groomed on set. The criminal complaint alleges Busfield told children to call him “Uncle Tim” and that he “would tickle them on the stomach and legs, despite them not liking the tickling,” according to the Daily Mail.
In October of last year, parents of one child reportedly contacted Child Protective Services, claiming their son told a therapist Busfield had grabbed his “genitalia” and “bottom” while filming.
