Another violent clash tied to America’s border crisis erupted on the streets of Southern California this week, as federal officers came under attack while trying to arrest a criminal illegal immigrant with a history of domestic violence and human smuggling.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the incident unfolded early Wednesday morning in Compton, where DHS officers were carrying out a targeted operation to take into custody William Eduardo Moran Carballo, an illegal alien from El Salvador who was already under a final order of removal issued by an immigration judge back in 2019.
Instead of surrendering, Carballo allegedly turned his vehicle into a weapon.
“In a dangerous attempt to evade arrest, this criminal illegal alien weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement. Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots,” a DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
The shots did not strike the suspect, DHS confirmed. Carballo then bailed out of the vehicle and tried to escape on foot. Law enforcement ultimately caught him, but not before one officer was hurt in the chaos.
“The criminal illegal alien was not hit and attempted to flee on foot. He was successfully apprehended by law enforcement. The illegal alien was not injured, but a CBP officer was injured,” the spokesperson added.
DHS identified Carballo as a violent offender tied to a human smuggling operation with two prior arrests for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant—another reminder, critics say, of the public safety risks created by weak immigration enforcement.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it was aware of the incident, which took place around 7:25 a.m. in the 2400 block of 126th Street in unincorporated Los Angeles. Deputies were asked to assist only with traffic control and were not directly involved.
“At approximately 7:25 a.m. Century Station deputies were requested to provide outside perimeter traffic control. The Sheriff’s Department was not directly involved in the incident,” the department told Fox News Digital.
DHS described the situation as still “evolving” and used the incident to sharply criticize sanctuary policies championed by California Democrats.
“These dangerous attempts to evade arrest have surged since sanctuary politicians, including Governor Newsom, have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest and provided guides advising illegal aliens how to recognize ICE, block entry, and defy arrest,” the DHS spokesperson said. “Our officers are now facing a 3,200% increase in vehicle attacks.”
