Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of deceased former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was assassinated in his garden on Tuesday, according to multiple outlets.

A group of four attackers shot Gaddafi in the garden of his residence in Zintan, Libya and fled shortly after. Gaddafi “confronted the attackers and was killed at around 2:30 a.m., local time,” Saudi Arabian outlet Al Arabiya first reported.

Gaddafi, 53, was the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Libya, a political party which sought to elect him as the nation’s president. Gaddafi reportedly registered as a presidential candidate in November 2021, although his candidacy was rejected by the country’s High National Elections Committee due to criminal convictions.

Rebels captured the younger Gaddafi during the overthrow of his father’s government in 2011 and detained for six years before being released in June 2017. The International Criminal Court charged Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in 2011 for “crimes against humanity,” including murder and persecution. He was also sentenced to death in 2015 by a Tripoli court for war crimes.
