Left tries to recreate Iwo Jima with Minnesota’s Somali-looking flag, Internet fires back

Tim Walz signed off on dumping the state’s longtime flag, branding it “racist” because it showed a Native American riding away as a white settler plowed the land, a rifle resting nearby. The image, critics said, symbolized conquest and displacement. In its place? A stripped-down design so generic that many observers immediately noted its uncanny resemblance to Somalia’s flag: a lone white star floating on a blue background.

Fast-forward to today, and the new banner is being hoisted as a warped left-wing symbol of “resistance,” and a slap in the face to US Marines who gave their lives in battle.

A group of progressive men in Minnesota recently staged a bizarre reenactment of the iconic World War II photograph of U.S. Marines raising the American flag at Iwo Jima—except this time, they swapped Old Glory for Minnesota’s newly minted look-alike flag. The moment, meant to project unity and defiance, instead a tone-deaf cosplay of American sacrifice.

The staged display was shared on X by Anton Treuer, a professor at Bemidji State University who describes himself as an “Indigenous language warrior.” While it’s unclear whether Treuer appears in the video himself, he enthusiastically promoted it with the caption:

“We stand for justice and a future worth fighting for! #MNStrong #iceout #Minnesota #peace #solidarity.”

The short clip shows six individuals bracing the flagpole in the same posture as the historic Iwo Jima photo—an image etched into American memory for honoring Marines who fought and died defeating tyranny abroad. The Minnesota version, however, lacks the gravity, the context, and the respect.

Despite the dramatic intent, the video failed to gain serious traction online. But that didn’t stop critics from piling on. Responses were fast, sarcastic, and in many cases amplified by AI-generated mockery, with commenters questioning why the left seems determined to borrow the imagery of American heroism while relentlessly undermining the nation that produced it.

Gary Bourlier sums it up best; “Offensive to every veteran and true patriot. Useful idiots.”
