President Donald Trump is once again putting America First—and this time, Canada is squarely in the crosshairs.
In a fiery Truth Social post Monday, Trump warned that a massive new bridge linking Michigan to Canada may never open unless Ottawa agrees to fair trade negotiations and stops sidelining American workers and products.
The project in question is the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a long-planned crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Though still under construction, Trump made clear the bridge’s future hinges on whether Canada comes to the table.
“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump wrote.
Trump didn’t mince words, accusing Canada of exploiting U.S. generosity while turning its back on American-made goods—particularly steel—and quietly moving closer to Communist China.
“We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump declared. “With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.”
At the heart of Trump’s frustration is what he says is a raw deal for American industry. According to Trump, the bridge is being built with “virtually no U.S. content,” despite its critical location on American soil. He pointed the finger squarely at former President Barack Obama, accusing him of “stupidly” granting Canada a waiver from the Buy American Act, which is supposed to protect U.S. manufacturers and workers.
That waiver, Trump says, allowed Canada to bypass requirements to use American steel and materials—yet still benefit from access to U.S. infrastructure and markets.
And it’s not just steel. Trump also blasted Ontario officials for banning U.S. alcohol from government-run liquor store shelves, calling it a blatant double standard.
“What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING!” Trump wrote. “Ontario won’t even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so…”
Trump reserved some of his strongest language for Canada’s growing ties with Beijing, warning that cozying up to China could cost Canadians more than they realize.
“…and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don’t think so.”
In classic Trump fashion, the warning came with a dramatic cultural twist—Canada’s beloved national pastime.
“The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup,” Trump said.
Trump’s long-held view has been that America has been too generous for too long, allowing allies to profit while U.S. workers foot the bill.
