President Donald Trump is reportedly venting behind closed doors after several Republican lawmakers rushed to scold him over a social media post that was quickly taken down.
The uproar began after Trump shared a video on Truth Social that briefly included a controversial image of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama depicted in a racist meme. The image appeared abruptly and fleetingly toward the end of the video. Within hours, the usual chorus of outrage erupted across cable news and social media — with little attention paid to how the image ended up there.
After roughly half a day online, the post was deleted. An unnamed White House official stated plainly, “A White House staffer erroneously made the post. It has been taken down.”
South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott didn’t mince words, declaring the post “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.” That public rebuke, according to new reporting from CNN, struck a nerve with the president.
During a segment on Anderson Cooper 360, correspondent Alayna Treene told host Anderson Cooper that Trump has been privately stewing over what he views as betrayal — not just from Scott, but from Alabama Sen. Katie Britt as well.
According to Treene, Trump was especially incensed that Scott went public rather than calling him directly. The president reportedly told allies he believed Scott — someone he considers to have a close relationship with him — should have handled the matter privately. In Trump’s view, it was Scott’s decision to label the post “racist” that amplified the controversy into a national spectacle.
Treene also noted that, according to one source, Scott did attempt to reach Trump before issuing his statement but was unable to connect — prompting him to post his criticism publicly.
As for Britt, the reported reaction was even harsher. Treene said Trump used “a lot of expletives” when discussing what he viewed as her lack of loyalty, adding that he had said she was “dead to him.”
Just days before the social media dustup, six Republicans had broken ranks over Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canada — a move that reportedly prompted Trump to warn they could “face primaries” and “suffer consequences in the elections.”
For Trump loyalists, the lesson is simple: if there’s a concern, pick up the phone — don’t sprint to the cameras.
