There are hard truths in life. Here’s one: not everyone deserves to own a pet.
That lesson played out in shocking fashion at Harry Reid International Airport earlier this month, where a 26-year-old woman allegedly decided that if she couldn’t board her flight, her dog didn’t deserve to either.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched to the airport late on February 2 after airline staff reported an abandoned dog left behind at a ticket counter.
The woman, identified as 26-year-old Germiran Bryson, had reportedly attempted to fly with a two-year-old golden doodle. Airline employees informed her she needed to complete online paperwork to travel with the animal as a service dog.
As police later explained:
“Airline staff advised the dog’s owner she was required to complete online documentation in order to travel with the animal as a service dog. When the required paperwork was not completed, the passenger was denied a boarding pass. She then left the dog behind and proceeded through the airport to the departure gate.”
Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of filling out the required forms or making alternative arrangements, she allegedly tied up the dog and headed for her gate.
Officers eventually caught up with her at Gate D1. When confronted, the explanation didn’t exactly inspire confidence.
“Officers later located the individual at Gate D1. When asked why she abandoned the dog, she stated the airline would not allow her to fly with it and claimed the dog had a tracking device — implying it was acceptable to leave the animal behind and it would return to her.”
A tracking device. As if that somehow transforms abandonment into responsible ownership. And it didn’t end there.
While being escorted back through security, things reportedly escalated.
“While escorting her back through the security checkpoint, she became hostile and resisted officers’ attempts to detain her.”
She was subsequently arrested and booked on charges of:
-
Animal Abandonment
-
Resisting Arrest
Meanwhile, airport employees and responding officers stepped in to care for the frightened dog while the suspect was processed. After a mandatory 10-day hold with Animal Protective Services, the doodle was transferred to a retriever rescue group and is now expected to find what every dog deserves — a stable, loving home.
Perhaps the most telling detail? Authorities indicated the woman never returned to reclaim the animal during the holding period.
Thankfully.
Social media users didn’t hold back. One commenter asked the obvious question:
“How could you leave a sweet guy like this tied up at the counter and decide to go board your plane?!”
Another put it bluntly:
“Thank God the dog wasn’t given back to her. She should be barred from having another. Good job, LVMPD.”
Others questioned whether the animal was ever truly a legitimate service dog in the first place:
“She left her ‘service dog’ tied up! I’d say that he/she wasn’t actually a ‘service dog’!”
If you can’t handle the responsibility, here’s a radical idea: don’t get the dog.
