Trump accepts WHCA dinner invite with a BANG and a wild taste of what’s in store

by

Washington’s most self-important dinner just got a whole lot more interesting.

President Donald J. Trump has confirmed he will attend the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this April — marking a dramatic shift after years of keeping his distance from the annual media bash. The announcement signals a possible thaw in what has long been one of the iciest relationships in American politics: Trump and the Beltway press corps.

In a Monday evening post on Truth Social, the president revealed he has accepted the WHCA’s invitation to serve as the event’s honoree — a role he previously declined during his first term, when tensions between his administration and the national media were at a boiling point.

“The White House Correspondents Association has asked me, very nicely, to be the Honoree at this year’s Dinner, a long and storied tradition since it began in 1924, under then President Calvin Coolidge. In honor of our Nation’s 250th Birthday, and the fact that these ‘Correspondents’ now admit that I am truly one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of our Country, the G.O.A.T., according to many, it will be my Honor to accept their invitation, and work to make it the GREATEST, HOTTEST, and MOST SPECTACULAR DINNER, OF ANY KIND, EVER!” Trump wrote.

The annual dinner — first held in 1924 during the administration of Calvin Coolidge — has long been marketed as a celebration of the First Amendment. Critics, however, have often described it as a cozy gathering where journalists and political elites mingle under the guise of constitutional reverence.

Trump made clear why he steered clear of the affair in the past.

“Because the Press was extraordinarily bad to me, FAKE NEWS ALL, right from the beginning of my First Term, I boycotted the event, and never went as Honoree. However, I look forward to being with everyone this year. Hopefully, it will be something very Special,” he added.

The last time Trump appeared at the dinner was in 2015, before his first successful run for the White House. Many still remember his 2011 appearance, when then-President Barack Obama took aim at Trump with biting jokes as the Washington crowd roared with laughter.

At the time, Obama mocked the notion of a Trump presidency — a moment that would later take on new meaning after Trump defied the political establishment not once, but twice, winning the presidency and subsequently undoing major pillars of Obama’s legacy, including the Iran nuclear agreement.

Now, in a twist few could have predicted a decade ago, Trump returns not as a punchline, but as the main attraction.

WHCA President Weijia Jiang welcomed the president’s decision in a formal statement, emphasizing the dinner’s century-long tradition and its mission to honor journalistic excellence and support scholarships for aspiring reporters.

“For more than 100 years, the journalists of the White House Correspondents’ Association have enjoyed an evening with the president, a dinner that celebrates the First Amendment while supporting the work we do, including awards honoring excellent journalism and scholarships to help the next generation of reporters who someday will be the ones asking the questions at the White House. We’re happy the president has accepted our invitation and look forward to hosting him,” she said.

This year’s event is scheduled for April 25 at the Washington Hilton, the longtime venue for the media spectacle.
