‘I ain’t giving you anything. Earn it’: Stephen A. Smith warns Dems, educates black voters

by

It wasn’t a campaign rally or a cable news shouting match — but it might as well have been.

Sports media heavyweight Stephen A. Smith lit a political firestorm Monday, delivering a blunt message to Democrats who have long counted on overwhelming support from Black voters: stop assuming, start earning.

The outspoken commentator, who has openly toyed with the idea of running for office himself, didn’t mince words. He warned against political scare tactics driving presidential elections.

“I keep reminding y’all, I don’t want us falling into fearmongering and all of this other stuff to decide who our commander in chief is going to be every four years,” Smith said candidly.

Enough with the hysteria. Enough with the emotional manipulation. Let voters — especially Black voters — evaluate candidates based on what they actually bring to the table.

Smith made it crystal clear that policy — not panic — should guide the ballot box. He wants leadership that prioritizes America’s interests first, while also addressing the real needs of the Black community.

“We make sure that they cater to America’s interests first, but just as importantly, as a Black man, the Black community,” he said. “I want us to stand up and say, ‘Hey, flatter me! Work for my vote! Don’t think that it automatically comes your way! You got to earn it!’”

For decades, Black voters have delivered staggering margins to Democratic candidates. Smith pointed out the numbers plainly.

“We’ve been giving the Democratic Party our vote above 80% since the ’60s. I’m not saying that should change,” he explained. “I’m saying let them earn it, as opposed to not doing anything for us, focusing on even smaller constituents than us.” In other words: loyalty is not a lifetime contract.

Smith also took aim at what many conservatives have criticized for years — the Left’s fixation on boutique causes while sidelining bread-and-butter concerns affecting millions.

“We make up 13.6% of the population,” he noted. “Stop concerning yourself with 1% of the population, if not less, when it comes to the interests of this country and the interests of communities that fall under the purview of this country.”

That’s a direct challenge to a party leadership increasingly preoccupied with niche ideological battles instead of kitchen-table issues like jobs, safety, education, and economic opportunity.

Perhaps most striking was Smith’s rejection of what has become a familiar Democratic campaign tactic: labeling the opposition as racist and expecting that alone to lock down votes.

“Look out for us, and don’t just be in our face saying that the other side is racist, so don’t vote for them. Like I’m supposed to believe you’re not. Nah,” Smith said. That line alone cuts through years of predictable political messaging.

Smith even broke it down with everyday logic: no one buys a house sight unseen. No one purchases a car without a test drive. No one commits to a suit without trying it on first.

“I ain’t giving you anything. Earn it,” he declared. “It’s all I’m saying.”
