President Donald Trump unveiled a major shift in his national security team Thursday, announcing that Kristi Noem will step aside as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security while Markwayne Mullin, the Republican senator from Oklahoma, is poised to take over the powerful post.
Noem, dubbed ‘ICE Barbie,’ presumably for her flawless glam look has had a rough few weeks.
The move comes as the administration continues its aggressive push to tighten border enforcement — a campaign that has drawn intense criticism from Democrats and even some friction inside Washington. The shake-up also follows a contentious appearance by Noem before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week, where lawmakers grilled the DHS chief during a heated hearing.
But inside Trump’s camp, the transition is being framed as a promotion to a key international security mission.
Trump revealed the personnel change in a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, praising Noem’s tenure while announcing she will soon take on a new diplomatic role tied to a hemispheric security effort.
“I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026,” Trump wrote.
He continued by explaining Noem’s next assignment:
“The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at ‘Homeland.’”
The new initiative — dubbed “The Shield of the Americas” — is expected to focus on cooperation among Western Hemisphere nations to counter illegal migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime networks.
Trump used the announcement to lavish praise on Mullin, describing the Oklahoma lawmaker as a fierce ally in the fight to advance the administration’s America First agenda.
“Serving 10 years in the United States House of Representatives, and 3 in the Senate, Markwayne has done a tremendous job representing the wonderful People of Oklahoma, where I won all 77 out of 77 Counties — in 2016, 2020, and 2024!”
Trump also highlighted Mullin’s unusual background for a cabinet nominee.
“A MAGA Warrior, and former undefeated professional MMA fighter, Markwayne truly gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda.”
The president emphasized Mullin’s historic status on Capitol Hill as well.
“As the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne is a fantastic advocate for our incredible Tribal Communities.”
The nomination signals that the administration intends to double down on its hard-line border agenda. Trump said Mullin would focus squarely on keeping criminals and drugs from entering the United States.
“Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”
Trump concluded his announcement with a strong endorsement of the senator’s leadership.
“Markwayne will make a spectacular Secretary of Homeland Security. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
