Hollywood actress Katherine Heigl is pushing back hard after online critics erupted over her appearance at a charity fundraiser held at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate owned by President Donald Trump.
The event — Wine, Women & Shoes Benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue — was held Sunday and reportedly raised an impressive $5 million to support animal rescue efforts. The fundraiser was co-chaired by Lara Trump, and attendees also included Jeanine Pirro, who posed for photos with the actress.
But instead of praise for helping raise millions for abandoned animals, the appearance triggered predictable outrage online from critics who tried to turn the charity event into a political controversy.
Heigl — widely recognized for starring in Grey’s Anatomy and the comedy film Knocked Up — made it clear that politics had nothing to do with why she attended. For the actress, the night was about something far simpler: saving animals.
Together with her mother, Nancy Heigl, the actress founded the Jason Heigl Foundation, a nonprofit named in honor of her late brother. The organization focuses on rescuing animals and promoting humane treatment.
Addressing the backlash publicly, Heigl explained that the cause she supports transcends partisan divides.
“Animals don’t vote. The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter. They are completely at the mercy of us, and they have no voice of their own. This event was about animal advocacy — something that has always been deeply personal to me. Anyone who knows me knows that protecting animals is one of my greatest passions.”
She added that caring about abandoned pets shouldn’t be controversial in the first place. According to Heigl, advocacy for animals “should not be a polarizing issue.”
Still, the internet mob came out swinging. Critics flooded social media posts about the event with personal attacks — something the actress was clearly not willing to ignore. On a post by entertainment outlet Just Jared, one commenter took a cheap shot at her career.
“She was hated on Greys. That’s why she can’t get a real job. Difficult. Thinks her s**t don’t stink,” the critic wrote.
Heigl fired right back with sarcasm.
“Your so silly…what’s a ‘real job’ in your so educated opinion?” she responded, adding laughing emojis.
Another critic tried to claim her appearance at the event was politically motivated, arguing that the outfit she wore “screamed Republican.” The commenter also insinuated she somehow profited from attending the fundraiser.
Heigl dismissed the accusation outright.
“Really? So I’m using animal advocacy to what? Line my pockets? Interesting…seems to be costing me more than I can make…but that’s ok,” she wrote. “At least my parents taught me to give more than I get. Taught me to do more than just judge. You seem…really meaningful in today’s society. Just keep screaming your virtue signaling bulls–t while doing nothing that really matters. Good on you.”
And while critics were busy complaining on social media, the fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago quietly delivered something that actually matters — millions of dollars to rescue animals that have no voice
