Nation rallies around struggling elderly DoorDash driver after video goes viral

by

A retired Tennessee man is capturing hearts across the country after being forced back to work to help cover his family’s bills. Richard Pulley, 78, had enjoyed retirement until his wife lost her job — and along with it, her health insurance. Faced with mounting medical costs and everyday expenses, Richard reluctantly returned to the workforce… as a DoorDash driver.

His routine deliveries might have gone unnoticed — if not for a fateful Starbucks drop-off. Brittany Smith, the customer who received Richard’s order, was struck by the difficulty he faced on the job. She took action, launching a GoFundMe campaign to lift the burden off the elderly couple.

“Richard delivered Starbucks to my home, and it was clear this was a tough job for him,” Smith wrote. “After some digging, I learned he had returned to work because his wife lost her job through no fault of her own. Between bills and medication, they were left with nothing. Let’s help Richard get back to retirement!”

Richard spoke candidly about his situation: “I work because I have to, not because I want to. My wife lost her job, and that also meant losing her health insurance. After paying our living and medical expenses, there’s nothing left at the end of the month.”

The response has been overwhelming. The campaign has raised more than $538,000 and counting — a testament to the power of social media and public generosity. Many on X praised the story as a reminder of the struggles seniors face and the kindness of strangers.

Richard isn’t working alone. His wife, Brenda, who has been married to him for over 56 years, helps by driving the car for deliveries. “It’s hard to believe so many people would reach out to help us,” Richard told WSMV. “We’re grateful to everyone — it’s taking a huge weight off our shoulders and making life livable again.”

Brenda added a sobering note about their reality: “Sometimes you just look at all the bills you need to pay… or you risk ending up in the hospital with something even more expensive.”

The story has struck a chord nationwide, highlighting the often-hidden financial struggles of America’s elderly. Rising inflation and limited social security leave many seniors working well past the age they should be enjoying retirement. Yet, the public response shows there’s still a deep well of compassion.
