Rand Paul took the gloves off and confronted Markwayne Mullin over prior personal insults on Wednesday.
During a high-stakes Homeland Security confirmation hearing, Paul didn’t mince words. Instead, he delivered a blistering rebuke of Mullin’s past comments—remarks he said appeared to trivialize, even justify, a violent assault that left Paul seriously injured in 2017.
“I was shocked that would justify and celebrate this violent assault that caused me so much pain and my family so much pain,” Paul said, his frustration unmistakable.
And then came the central question—one that cut to the chase.
“I just wonder if someone who applauds violence against their political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has struggled to accept limits to the proper use of force?” “You’ve got a chance today. You can either continue to lie or you can correct the record. You have never had the courage to look me in the eye and tell me that the assault was justified.” “Tell it to my face if that’s what you believe. Tell it to me today.”
Yet Mullin showed no sign of backing down. He answered Paul’s challenge – right to his face.
In his own remarks, he stood firm—offering no apology and reiterating his claim that he had already said as much to Paul directly. He dismissed the clash as a simple personality conflict:
