President Donald Trump wrapped up a headline-grabbing day in classic fashion—commanding the room at a formal White House dinner while Japan’s leader openly admired the First Family.
Earlier, Trump had critics clutching their pearls after delivering a sharp-edged remark in the Oval Office when pressed about military secrecy. Asked why allies weren’t tipped off ahead of a strike on Iran, Trump didn’t mince words:
“One thing, you don’t want to signal too much. When we went in, we went in very hard and did not tell anybody about it because we wanted the surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why did you not tell me about Pearl Harbor? Okay, right?”
The reference to the Pearl Harbor predictably stirred controversy among the usual critics—but for supporters, it reinforced Trump’s no-nonsense, America-first posture on national security.
At a formal state dinner, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi struck a gracious—and surprisingly personal—note, offering warm praise not just for Trump’s leadership, but for his family.
Opening her remarks, Takaichi expressed appreciation for the hospitality before pivoting to a more lighthearted moment: recognizing the birthday of Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump.
Her full remarks, delivered through a translator, drew smiles and laughter across the room:
“The Honorable President Donald J. Trump, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for hosting such a beautiful dinner for me and my delegation.
Thank you very much for your warm feelings toward Japan and your friendship.
So tonight, I would like to start off by extending my sincere congratulations on two important anniversaries.
The first one is a birthday celebration. Donald, tomorrow is the birthday of your son, Mr. Barron Trump. And I know he has grown up so much into a very tall, good looking gentleman.
As I see you, Donald, it is very clear where he got it.
(LAUGHTER).
Of course, from his parents, there is no doubt about it. So Donald, if I may ask you, please convey my sincere happy birthday wishes to him.”
The compliment also extended, implicitly, to First Lady Melania Trump—with Takaichi jokingly acknowledging the obvious source of Barron’s striking appearance.
