Mob of 85 bikers kiss their rides goodbye after trying to take over Bay Bridge

by

A brazen “takeover” attempt targeting the heavily trafficked San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge was crushed in its tracks March 28, as law enforcement swooped in to stop a swarm of reckless cyclists before they could turn a commuter lifeline into a danger zone.

The California Highway Patrol’s San Francisco Area office, teaming up with the San Francisco Police Department, spotted trouble early. Officers tracked the pack as it tore through city streets, riding like rules didn’t exist — weaving, swerving, and taunting traffic — all while heading straight for one of the state’s busiest arteries.

Their endgame? The Bay Bridge.

The group made a bold — and wildly dangerous — move, entering via the Harrison Street off-ramp and pedaling straight into oncoming traffic. But what they didn’t count on: cops were already waiting.

Law enforcement had staged units in advance, anticipating exactly this kind of stunt.

Video footage released by CHP shows a police helicopter circling overhead as officers closed in and sealed off access, cutting the chaos off at the pass before it spilled onto the freeway.

“The group was observed riding through the city. Similar incidents in the past have progressed to the group entering the bridge,” a CHP spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “We worked with SFPD to stage units nearby and continue to monitor.”

That foresight paid off.

“Through ongoing communications and a lot of moving parts, the theory was proven correct and the group was intercepted before gaining access,” the spokesperson added.

By the time the dust settled, 85 riders had been detained and cited for illegally riding bicycles on a freeway. All were released at the scene — but not without consequences. Officers seized all 85 bikes, which will now be checked against stolen property databases. Any hits could mean more charges down the road.

Despite the crackdown, officials noted that, in similar cases, “there aren’t typically stolen bikes, as participants take a lot of personal pride in their rides,” likening the culture to the lawless “sideshow” scene that has plagued California streets.

And make no mistake — this was no harmless joyride.

Authorities described a rolling hazard: cyclists darting into traffic, riding directly at moving cars, and coming perilously close to pedestrians. Some even appeared to challenge drivers head-on.

“Throughout the incident, riders were seen riding directly at moving vehicles, swerving in and out of traffic, and coming dangerously close to pedestrians,” CHP said, issuing a blunt warning that this kind of behavior “cannot be tolerated.”

Officials stressed the nightmare scenario had the group made it onto the freeway, where higher speeds could have turned reckless antics into deadly consequences in seconds.

“What we saw yesterday was not harmless fun,” said CHP San Francisco Area Captain Tim McCollister. “This is no place for games or risky behavior.”

“We will continue to enforce the law and hold individuals accountable,” he said.

CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Steve Ramos praised the coordinated crackdown, saying officers “stopped this group before they could wreak havoc on our freeways.”

One especially alarming detail: many of the riders were juveniles — including a participant as young as 9 years old — raising fresh concerns about how these dangerous stunts are spreading among kids.

Authorities say these roaming bike mobs are becoming more common, with groups growing bolder, more aggressive, and more willing to challenge motorists in increasingly risky ways.
