Would-be Columbine copycat stopped cold by 60-year-old principal with guts of steel

One Oklahoma principal did what too many so-called leaders wouldn’t dare — he ran toward the gunfire.

Kirk Moore, a 60-year-old high school principal with more than three decades in education, didn’t wait for a memo, a task force, or a “trauma-informed response.” When a gunman stormed into Pauls Valley High School last Tuesday, Moore charged him — and took a bullet in the process.

Surveillance video captures the moment: a black-hooded former student, 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, waving a semi-automatic pistol and barking orders. Students freeze. Chaos looms. And then Moore appears — not retreating, not hiding — but confronting the threat head-on.

According to investigators, Hawkins wasn’t shy about his intentions. He “didn’t like Principal Moore” and “went to the school to kill” him. He even tried to fire at a student, ordering people to the ground like something out of a nightmare scenario we’ve seen too often.

But this time, something different happened. The gun malfunctioned. A student pleaded. And Moore moved.

Hawkins then aimed directly at Moore’s head and pulled the trigger. The shot struck Moore in the leg — but instead of collapsing, the wounded principal lunged forward, tackling the gunman onto a bench in a scene that looks more like a Hollywood script than real life.

Moore pinned the attacker’s arm, forcing the weapon loose. Another staff member rushed in to help, kicking the gun away and ending the threat before it could escalate into another national tragedy.

“The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives today,” said an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson. Saved lives. Plural.

Meanwhile, Hawkins — who admitted he stole the guns from his father — told investigators he “wanted to conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did.” Another twisted mind chasing infamy, inspired by one of the darkest chapters in American history.

Instead, the story ended with a suspect in custody and students alive — thanks to a man who didn’t hesitate.

Local officials are calling Moore a hero. That’s accurate, but it almost undersells it. This wasn’t just bravery; it was instinct, responsibility, and a refusal to surrender to the kind of evil that preys on soft targets.

Moore, for his part, is recovering and reportedly in good condition — a quiet ending for a man who just prevented unimaginable devastation. The suspect now faces charges including shooting with intent to kill and is set to appear in court May 8.
