When asked about Republican outrage over Virginia’s latest redistricting shake-up, progressive firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn’t bother with policy nuance. Instead, she went straight for mockery, interrupting a question mid-sentence to deliver a theatrical jab: “Oh, wah, wah, wah.”
The drama stems from Virginia’s freshly approved mid-decade congressional map, which—surprise, surprise—tilts heavily in Democrats’ favor. Out of 11 House districts, Dems could now have the upper hand in 10. It’s the latest twist in an ongoing national tug-of-war over who gets to draw the political battlefield—and how.
This particular round comes after a chain reaction set off by moves in Republican-led states, including Texas, where map redraws have been aggressively pursued following pressure from Donald Trump and GOP allies.
So when LCB reporter Matt Laslo tried to tee up a question about Republican complaints, Ocasio-Cortez didn’t just answer—she pounced.
“Listen,” she said, pivoting from mockery to message, “Democrats have attempted and asked Republicans for ten years to ban partisan gerrymandering, and for ten years, Republicans have said no.”
She continued, laying out what she framed as a decade-long GOP strategy: “Republicans have fought for partisan gerrymanders across the United States of America, and these are the rules that they have set.”
“They drew out three Democratic members of Congress in North Carolina. They drew out in Texas. They re-did Texas,” she said, ticking off examples. “What they’re just mad at is that they have been accustomed to a Democratic Party that rolls over… and takes everything sitting down.”
Not anymore, she insisted.
“What they’re mad at right now is that we are here in a new day… now they did [fight], and now the Republican Party doesn’t like the fact that they are fighting against someone who actually will stand up for the American people.”
Ocasio-Cortez even dangled a bogus peace offering of sorts: “If Republicans decide that they would like to revisit a ban on partisan gerrymandering, I welcome them. We have the bill right here to end this all today.” Sure. We know how that works.
Later in the day, she doubled down on the snark when asked about Trump’s reported frustration with the Virginia outcome.
“I’m so sorry for his heartbreak at this moment,” she said, dripping with sarcasm. “And I look forward to adding two—or rather ten more Democratic colleagues in November.”
AOC is asked about Republicans criticizing Democrats for cheating at elections by gerrymandering districts.
Her response is literally: “Wah, wah, wah.”
What an imbecile. She then admits that the partisan redistricting Democrats are doing is in fact cheating. But she doesn’t… pic.twitter.com/ZpHKm6aYd5
