A father’s late-night cigarette run turned into every parent’s worst nightmare — and a jaw-dropping rescue straight out of an action movie.
Terrifying video from Bogota, Colombia, shows a 2-year-old boy dangling from the outside of a fourth-floor balcony as horrified neighbors scream from below. For several agonizing seconds, the toddler clutches the ledge with both hands while stunned residents scramble into position underneath him with blankets, jackets and anything else they can grab.
Then disaster strikes.
The child suddenly loses his grip and plunges downward, appearing to slam against part of the building on the way down before crashing into the makeshift human safety net assembled by neighbors below.
Miraculously, the toddler survived.
The near-fatal ordeal unfolded around 9 p.m. on May 7 in the Colombian capital after the boy’s father allegedly left him alone in the apartment while stepping out to buy cigarettes with his brother, according to local reports.
“I went out for a moment with my brother to buy some cigarettes. We wanted to smoke them outside so we would not fill the apartment with smoke because there is a small child there,” the father told local media.
Because apparently the best way to protect a toddler from cigarette smoke is to leave him unattended in a fourth-floor apartment.
“When we came back from the shop, the child was already on the balcony, and everything had happened,” the father added. He said the boy suffered “no fractures” and was otherwise in “good condition.”
Witnesses said the little boy had somehow climbed onto the balcony edge using brick blocks attached to the wall. One neighbor spotted the child leaning dangerously over the side after returning home from a nearby store — and immediately realized catastrophe was seconds away.
“What I imagined was that a child should not be there alone and should be with someone,” the neighbor told local media. “I started talking to him, he started turning around, and he was left holding on only with his arms.”
That’s when residents on the ground sprang into action, gathering beneath the balcony and stretching out blankets in a desperate bid to cushion the inevitable fall.
The dramatic rescue has sparked outrage online, with many viewers praising the quick-thinking neighbors while blasting the adults responsible for leaving the toddler alone in the first place. Child protection officials are now reportedly investigating the family’s living conditions and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
