Bronx woman screams ‘Jews are eating kids’ before allegedly ripping hair from Jewish rider

New York City’s subway system — already a rolling case study in chaos — has once again delivered a scene so ugly it reads like satire, except it isn’t. In the latest disturbing episode, a Bronx woman has been arrested after allegedly unleashing a vile anti-Semitic tirade and then physically attacking a Jewish passenger in Lower Manhattan.

Police identified the suspect as Diana Smith, who allegedly turned a crowded afternoon train into a moving hate-filled spectacle around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. What began as verbal harassment quickly escalated into what authorities are now treating as a hate crime assault.

According to footage circulating on social media, Smith — wearing a camouflage jacket — is seen standing in the train car shouting, “Jews are eating kids!” The clip then shows her directing her attention toward a 23-year-old Orthodox Jewish woman from the Upper West Side, smirking as she says, “You’re a Jew, I smell the kids.”

Witnesses say the situation spiraled further as Smith continued her barrage, reportedly yelling again, “Jews are eating kids,” while passengers looked on in shock. At one point, she allegedly added, “It’s ok for Jews to eat kids, but I can’t choke her now,” as riders attempted, unsuccessfully, to calm her down.

The young victim — a nurse and Montreal native who asked not to be publicly identified — told the New York Post she had boarded just one stop before the confrontation began. She said Smith initially fixated on another couple, ranting about what she called the “dangers of Jews stealing wealth,” before turning her attention directly to her.

Smith allegedly told her, “You could always see the reflection of a Jew,” before staring and smiling in what the victim described as an eerie, deliberate provocation.

The victim recalled refusing to show fear. “I decided in that moment I really did not want to show fear in the face of that, so I stared at her right back down, and I said, ‘So you see my reflection?’”

Smith allegedly replied: “Yeah, and I smell it on you too.”

From there, things turned violent. The victim says her phone was knocked from her hand during the ordeal, and Smith then allegedly escalated to physical assault — choking her, pushing her to the ground, and pulling out a clump of her hair.

Bystanders reportedly gasped, but — as so often happens in modern subway horror stories — intervention came late, if at all. The victim said, “No one intervened with Smith’s behavior until it was too late.”

Eventually, she managed to escape at the next stop and flagged down police, while another rider hit the emergency button. She later told reporters she suffered a concussion and described the aftermath of identifying her attacker as emotionally jarring. “When I had to identify her, a ton of people were like, ‘Oh, we saw what happened, are you OK?’ And, that was extremely triggering for me, because, of course, I’m not OK. I kept just thinking, I’m not in Nazi Germany,” she said.

Smith was arrested shortly afterward and now faces a slate of charges including hate crime assault, hate crime criminal obstruction of breathing, and aggravated harassment.

The victim spoke out about her alleged attacker: “She’s pure evil, but she was lucid enough to know I was Jewish.”
