House floor brawl: GOP lawmaker triggers Tlaib with ‘hanging out’ with Hezbollah accusation

The House of Representatives turned into a shouting match Wednesday when Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) leveled a politically explosive accusation at Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), triggering nearly an hour of procedural chaos and exposing yet again the deep divide over America’s ally Israel and the threat posed by Iranian-backed terror groups.

The fireworks erupted during debate over Tlaib’s resolution aimed at restricting U.S. backing for Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. What began as a policy dispute quickly spiraled into one of the most dramatic floor confrontations Congress has seen this year.

Miller, a staunch supporter of Israel, argued that many critics of Israel’s actions are either ignoring or minimizing the threat posed by Hezbollah — the heavily armed Lebanese organization designated as a terrorist group by the United States and numerous Western governments.

“While I can appreciate the passion from my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, I do not appreciate their lack of education and understanding of what is really going on there,” Miller said. “Hezbollah is a terrorist organization, the gentle lady from Michigan, and its members are butchers that you like to hang out with to a certain extent.”

That remark detonated like a political hand grenade.

Tlaib immediately sprang into action, demanding that the statement be removed from the Congressional Record. But instead of backing down, Miller escalated.

“Oh, I’m sorry, are we getting a little emotional?” he fired back.

The chamber instantly descended into disorder. Members shouted over one another while the presiding officer struggled to regain control.

“I’m hanging out with terrorists now?” Tlaib yelled across the floor.

Miller wasn’t retreating.

“I certainly believe you advocate for them, yes,” he responded. “You advocate for terrorists on a daily basis.”

At that point, lawmakers were talking over one another, parliamentary objections were flying, and normal House business ground to a halt. Tlaib repeatedly argued that the comments constituted a personal attack and demanded they be struck.

“That is a direct attack on my character,” she said. “Please, request a motion to strike the words down.”

The confrontation reportedly froze proceedings for roughly 45 minutes as House leaders scrambled to resolve the dispute. Miller reportedly refused requests to voluntarily withdraw his remarks, setting up a standoff that highlighted the growing tension surrounding Tlaib’s long-running criticism of Israel and the broader Middle East conflict.

Eventually, the chair intervened.

“Such remarks impugn the patriotism and loyalty of a member of the House, which is not in order,” the presiding officer ruled. “Without objection, the offending words are stricken from the record.”

But the drama didn’t end there.

Miller was barred from speaking on the House floor for the remainder of the day. Rather than let the issue die, Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.), another outspoken defender of Israel, stepped in and delivered a statement on Miller’s behalf.

“Yes, I said it. I own it, and I stand by it,” Mast read from Miller’s prepared remarks.

Tlaib has become one of Congress’ most vocal critics of Israel and has repeatedly drawn scrutiny from opponents who argue her rhetoric softens or excuses extremist groups hostile to the Jewish state. Supporters counter that she is advocating for Palestinian rights and opposing military actions she believes cause civilian suffering.
