The Golden State Democrat, widely viewed as a potential contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, fired off yet another social media broadside aimed at President Donald Trump this week. In a video post, Newsom painted a dark picture of Trump’s political ambitions, suggesting that intimidating voters and undermining democratic norms are part of the president’s playbook.
There’s just one problem with that narrative: many voters have spent the last decade watching Democrats level accusations against Trump that critics say often mirror concerns surrounding their own party’s conduct.
The irony wasn’t lost on conservatives online.
Newsom’s latest message quickly drew mockery from critics who argued that Democrats are in no position to lecture anyone about voter confidence after suffering a decisive defeat in the 2024 election. Trump returned to the White House with a clear electoral victory, carrying key battleground states and expanding support among several demographic groups that had traditionally leaned Democratic.

That reality makes Newsom’s latest warnings sound less like a serious political argument and more like an audition tape for Democratic primary voters.
For years, Democrats and their media allies warned that Trump represented an existential threat to democracy. Yet despite those dire predictions, voters handed him another term. Instead of reevaluating why Americans rejected their message, many Democratic leaders seem content to recycle the same talking points that failed before.
Newsom’s post is simply the latest example of a familiar pattern: accuse Trump of behavior that Democrats themselves have been accused of engaging in, then act shocked when voters don’t buy it.
Conservative commentators online were especially blunt, joking that “projection” has become Newsom’s signature political brand. Others quipped that if projection were an Olympic sport, the California governor would already be standing atop the podium.
The governor’s detractors argue that every new anti-Trump social media post only reinforces the perception that Democrats remain obsessed with relitigating old battles instead of addressing the issues voters actually care about — inflation, public safety, border security, energy costs, and economic growth.
Whether Newsom ultimately launches a White House bid remains to be seen. But if he does, Republicans are likely to keep a file cabinet full of moments like this one ready for campaign season.
Because when your political strategy revolves around accusing your opponent of your side’s biggest vulnerabilities, voters tend to notice.
And judging by the reaction to Newsom’s latest video, plenty of Americans already have.

Projection much?
You favor sending strangers into people’s homes and having them “help” fill out mail-in ballots and then carry them in (presuming they voted “correctly”). Hardly a secret ballot, eh?— Chuck DeVore (@ChuckDeVore) June 11, 2026
