The revelation comes after FBI Director Kash Patel announced that federal authorities disrupted what investigators described as a potential plot targeting the UFC America 250 event in Washington, D.C. According to Patel, the FBI, Department of Justice, and multiple law-enforcement agencies launched a coordinated operation after learning of the threat on June 10. Several suspects were ultimately taken into custody across multiple states.
But while the headlines sounded alarming, Vance suggested the reality was far less dramatic.
Appearing on Fox News’ The Five, the vice president said extensive security measures were already in place around the event and indicated the alleged conspirators had barely progressed beyond discussion stages.
“There was a lot of security there,” Vance said. “And it turns out the plot was like, not that advanced. They weren’t in town. They had not really done that much planning. And so, I get why people are so fascinated by it. I do think the political violence and rhetoric in this country is out of control. But thank God we have good law enforcement. We’ve got good FBI because it didn’t even get close to the point of execution.”
According to reports, federal investigators intercepted Signal messages involving more than 20 individuals. Some participants allegedly discussed using drones and explosives to target the event attended and hosted by Trump. Authorities reportedly moved quickly once the communications were uncovered, preventing the discussions from developing any further.
Meanwhile, a separate controversy erupted over Patel’s public announcement of the arrests. Reports indicated that some officials within the Secret Service were unhappy that details became public before all suspects had been apprehended and while portions of the investigation remained under seal.
That criticism drew little sympathy from supporters of the administration, who argue the bigger story is that law enforcement successfully identified and dismantled a potential threat before it reached an operational stage.
Fox News host Jesse Watters praised the FBI’s handling of the case, telling Vance, “And an amazing job by the FBI. Again, Kash Patel getting out in front of it so it never materialized.”
For now, the emerging picture appears to be one of alleged extremists talking tough in encrypted chats but failing to advance much beyond online fantasies before federal agents stepped in.
