Rashida Tlaib’s reaction to prison for anti-ICE terrorist is causing outrage

by

When federal prosecutors announced lengthy prison sentences for a group of activists convicted in connection with a violent attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, many Americans assumed the story would end there.

Then Rep. Rashida Tlaib weighed in.

The Michigan Democrat ignited a fresh controversy this week after condemning the sentences handed down to several activists convicted in connection with a July 2025 attack on an ICE detention facility. According to court records and trial testimony, what began as a late-night demonstration escalated into a far more dangerous confrontation. Protesters reportedly arrived at the facility on Independence Day intending to stage a noisy demonstration in solidarity with detainees. Authorities said some participants later vandalized property, slashed tires, damaged surveillance equipment, and targeted vehicles at the site. The situation turned far more serious when law enforcement arrived.

According to reporting on the case, one participant fired an AR-15-style rifle from a wooded area, striking a federal officer in the shoulder. The officer survived. The shooter, Benjamin Song, was later convicted on multiple charges, including attempted murder of a federal officer and firearms-related offenses. He received a sentence of 100 years in prison. Several other defendants received lengthy sentences ranging from 50 to 70 years after being convicted on charges that included riot-related offenses, explosives violations, material support for terrorism, and other crimes.

The severity of the sentences immediately sparked debate.

While law and order Americans pointed to the shooting of a federal officer and the use of explosives, Tlaib focused her criticism on the Trump administration.

In a social media post following the sentencing, she wrote:

“These sentences are a travesty and totally unjustified, but that’s the point. Americans hate the fascist Trump regime, so the only way they can try to cling to power is brute force. NSPM-7 is a grave threat to all of us and more bullshit ‘terrorism’ charges like these are coming.”

The response was swift and quickly spilled across social media.

Commentators from across the political spectrum questioned why a member of Congress would characterize the convictions as unjust while appearing to downplay the seriousness of the crimes involved.

This is where a lot of Americans throw up their hands and wonder if they’ve accidentally wandered into an alternate universe.

Let’s review the facts. An ICE facility was targeted. Property was vandalized. Explosives were allegedly used. A federal officer was shot. Not insulted on social media. Not criticized in an op-ed. Shot.

And somehow the outrage, at least from Rep. Tlaib, is directed at the sentences.

That’s the part that leaves ordinary Americans scratching their heads.

For years we’ve been told that “words are violence,” that political rhetoric is dangerous, and that threats against public officials must be taken seriously. Yet when an actual federal officer is wounded during an attack connected to a political cause favored by many on the activist left, suddenly we’re having a debate about whether the punishment was too harsh.

Imagine for a moment the reaction if a right-wing activist group had shown up armed with rifles and explosives, shot a federal officer, and then claimed they were just engaging in political protest. Does anyone honestly believe prominent Democrats would be talking about excessive sentences? Or would cable news be running wall-to-wall coverage about domestic extremism?

That’s why comments like these resonate so poorly outside activist circles. Most Americans don’t see a complicated ideological debate. They see a simple principle, if you bring guns and explosives to a political confrontation and a law enforcement officer ends up shot, prison is exactly where you should expect to spend a very long time.
