Tomi Lahren blasts DHS Sec. over path for Haitians: ‘Don’t be surprised if Conservatives stay home in Nov’

by

There is a famous rule in politics, never underestimate your own voters. Apparently, that lesson has to be relearned every few election cycles.

A growing argument inside conservative circles erupted this week after Fox News host Tomi Lahren criticized the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement and warned that some Republican voters could lose motivation heading into the midterm elections.

Her frustration came after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin appeared on CNN and was asked about roughly 350,000 Haitians living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status.

When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked whether those individuals would be deported, Mullin described multiple possible paths forward. “They can try to apply for a Permanent Residence here, they can apply for a temporary visa if they choose to, or they can choose to go back,” Mullin said. “And if they wanna go back, we’ll help them with that.”

That answer did not satisfy Lahren. She responded on X: “So no voter ID and now mass deportations aren’t happening either. Why do we elect Republicans?”

A party can have a strong message, good candidates, and a favorable political environment — but if the people who normally show up decide the effort is not worth it, elections can change quickly.

Lahren later added: “Don’t be surprised when conservatives stay home in November. I’m not advocating for it but I won’t be surprised.”

Every election season brings warnings that one side’s voters are angry, disappointed, or ready to sit out. Sometimes it is real. Sometimes it is just political theater.

But this particular frustration touches two issues that have been central to Republican voters for years, immigration enforcement and election rules.

On immigration, many conservative voters expected dramatic action after years of promises about border security and removals. The administration has argued that enforcement priorities, legal processes, and available authorities all shape what can realistically happen. But voters who expected a simple “promise made, promise kept” approach are now asking why the machinery of government always seems to move slower than the campaign speeches.

That is an old Washington problem. Candidates campaign like bulldozers. Governments operate like a committee trying to decide where to park the bulldozer.

The second issue is election rules. Lahren’s comments also referenced Republican efforts around the SAVE America Act, legislation backed by President Donald Trump that supporters say would strengthen voter identification and citizenship verification requirements for federal elections.

Trump has pushed Republicans in Congress to advance the bill before the 2026 midterms, arguing it is a critical priority. The president also canceled a housing-related event, saying the signing would wait until the voting legislation moved forward. “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote.

The loudest criticism is not coming from Democrats.

It is coming from voters and commentators who believe Republicans are not moving aggressively enough on issues they campaigned on.

Lahren’s related video message to Senate Republicans caught fire on Twitter, as well. She told them that they need to STOP SITTING ON THEIR HANDS and secure our elections, so the Democrats can’t get away with mass voter fraud any longer “If we get the SAVE America Act, we’d have voter ID and proof of citizenship. Watch how quickly Democrats give up all their other arguments for illegals!” “Go for that as HARD as we can. That’s why the Senate needs to do something. Stop sitting on your hands — MAKE IT HAPPEN!”
