Citizen Vigilante movie banned in Germany captures rage over illegals; MAGA makes it a huge hit

by

Nothing says “please ignore this” quite like a bunch of people screaming, “YOU MUST NOT WATCH THIS.”

That is exactly what happened with Citizen Vigilante, a new film from German director Uwe Boll that has become the latest flashpoint in the culture war.

The movie, released June 19, stars Armie Hammer as an American living in Europe who turns vigilante after becoming convinced authorities are failing to protect ordinary citizens. Hammer, known for his role as one of the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, stepped away from Hollywood after sexual abuse allegations in 2021. Prosecutors ultimately did not file charges.

Before the film’s release, it was already generating controversy overseas. In Germany, the film was not granted a rating, preventing a normal theatrical release. Critics argued the movie promoted violence against Muslim immigrants, pointing to scenes involving the main character attacking criminals.

Supporters of the film rejected that interpretation, arguing the movie reflects growing frustration among citizens who believe governments have ignored concerns about crime, borders, and public safety.

The controversy intensified after Elon Musk shared the film on X, drawing even more attention. The post was later deleted, but copies circulated widely online.

Political commentator Patrick Bet-David praised the film, arguing it connected with a larger frustration among many voters. “Citizen Vigilante taps into the rage millions of people feel when their own government won’t protect them or their kids,” Bet-David said. “No wonder Germany and several other countries banned it,” he added. “A must watch.”

The movie’s supporters framed the response as another example of cultural gatekeepers trying to decide what ordinary people are allowed to watch, discuss, or criticize. Director Uwe Boll has suggested the unexpected attention could lead to a sequel.

Well, congratulations, cultural elites. You did it again.

The modern censorship machine has become the world’s greatest marketing department. A movie nobody was talking about suddenly becomes a national conversation because critics decided the public wasn’t mature enough to see it.

That’s the funny part. The same people who claim to worship free expression suddenly discover an emergency exception when the expression makes them uncomfortable.

The MAGA movement didn’t build its energy by waiting for approval from Hollywood executives, corporate media editors, or European bureaucrats. It grew because millions of people felt ignored — especially on issues like borders, crime, and government accountability.

And when someone tries to shut down a conversation instead of answering the concerns behind it, people notice. The left’s cultural gatekeepers keep making the same mistake: they confuse disagreement with danger. They think if they can label something, ban something, or shame people for discussing something, the issue disappears.

Nothing drives attention like a giant neon sign saying: “You’re not supposed to look at this.” Duh.
