WASHINGTON — A House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on sanctuary city policies erupted into a heated confrontation Tuesday as Republican and Democratic lawmakers traded accusations over immigration enforcement, crime and political accountability.
The clash centered on Rep. Mike Lawler and Rep. Jamie Raskin during a hearing examining local policies that limit cooperation between law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities.
The dispute began as Lawler introduced testimony involving the family of an 18-year-old college student who was allegedly killed by an individual unlawfully present in the United States.
While discussing the case, Lawler argued that lawmakers should show the same concern for victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants as they do for other victims of violence.
“While some of my colleagues may not want to hear the truth, the same outrage you feel about Renee Good and Alex Pretti, you should feel about Sheridan Gorman and Laken Riley and every angel family in this country,” Lawler said.
That comment immediately drew a response from Raskin. “I do feel that outrage,” the Maryland Democrat replied.
Lawler fired back, “You do not!”
The exchange quickly escalated, with both lawmakers speaking over one another as other committee members attempted to restore order.
Raskin challenged Lawler’s characterization of Democratic views on immigration-related crimes and questioned whether Republicans were applying the same standards consistently.
As tensions mounted, Rep. Pramila Jayapal objected to Lawler’s remarks, arguing that he had moved beyond a witness introduction and into a political statement.
Committee leaders attempted to regain control of the proceedings, but the confrontation continued.
At one point, Raskin sharply criticized Lawler, telling him he did not understand committee rules or constitutional principles.
Lawler responded by accusing Democrats of failing to confront the consequences of sanctuary policies and arguing they should be ashamed of their positions.
Sanctuary policies have deadly consequences. @RepMikeLawler stood up for the family. Well done Mike! 👏🏻

The hearing eventually resumed, but the episode highlighted the intensity of congressional disagreements surrounding immigration policy.
Neither lawmaker immediately issued additional public comments following the confrontation.
So, Congress held an immigration hearing and it turned into a shouting match. In other news, water remains wet.
Members know the clips will end up online within minutes.
Supporters will cheer. Opponents will fume. Cable news will replay the highlights.
Meanwhile, the underlying policy questions remain largely unresolved. The shouting gets louder. The solutions remain elusive. And the immigration debate rolls on.
