An Ohio city found itself at the center of a social media firestorm this week after a municipal department announced that City Hall would raise the Somali flag to commemorate Somali Independence Day—just as Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The controversy erupted Wednesday when the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted a message celebrating the anniversary of Somalia’s independence and apparent unification in 1960.
“Happy Somali Independence Day!” the department wrote on social media. “As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia.”
The message spread rapidly online, drawing criticism from conservatives, journalists, elected officials, and America First advocates who questioned why a government building in the capital city of Ohio would be raising the flag of a foreign nation days before Independence Day celebrations honoring America’s 250th birthday.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller responded bluntly. “Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250.”
Journalist Mark Hemingway wrote, “No American government building should ever be raising another country’s flag. Ugh.”
Ohio attorney and commentator Mehek Cooke added, “City Hall is not a foreign embassy.”
Cooke continued: “As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. Our leaders treat foreign nationalism as sacred while treating American patriotism as controversial. America’s public buildings should honor America.”
The backlash intensified because Columbus is home to one of the nation’s largest Somali immigrant communities and has recently been the focus of heightened scrutiny involving investigations and allegations surrounding public assistance programs and nonprofit funding connected to members of the local Somali community.
Ohio Republican state Rep. Brian Stewart questioned the message as well. “If Somalia is such a failed state that we need to take in tens of thousands of its citizens as ‘refugees,’ then we really don’t need to be celebrating its supposed ‘independence’ with patronizing posts on social media,” Stewart wrote. “One more way in which we encourage the refusal to assimilate.”
As criticism mounted, the post quietly disappeared. After inquiries from reporters, Columbus officials insisted the announcement was inaccurate.
A city spokesperson told Fox News Digital, “A social media post created by a city department falsely stated that City Hall would raise the Somalian flag in recognition of Somali Independence Day.”
The spokesperson added, “While the City recognizes and respects the aspirations of people around the world to live in freedom, this post was inaccurate and has been deleted.”
The city did not explain how such an announcement was published if no flag-raising was planned, nor did officials clarify whether any recognition ceremony had been considered before the post appeared online.
You have to love the timing.
America is about to celebrate 250 years of independence. The biggest patriotic milestone most of us will see in our lifetimes.
And somehow a city department in Ohio thought the appropriate message was: “Happy Somali Independence Day!”
You can’t make this stuff up.
The best part is the official explanation. We’re told the post was “inaccurate.” Interesting.
It was a detailed statement explaining the history of Somali independence and announcing a flag-raising at City Hall. That’s a pretty elaborate mistake.
What likely happened is what always happens. Somebody in government assumed everyone would applaud another multicultural celebration, hit “post,” and then acted shocked when ordinary Americans asked a very simple question: Why are government buildings celebrating foreign nationalism when America is turning 250?
Notice what nobody is saying. Nobody is arguing that Somali-Americans can’t celebrate their heritage. Of course they can. That’s one of the freedoms America provides.
The issue is whether government buildings should be used to elevate the symbols of foreign nations while patriotism itself is often treated like something that needs an apology attached to it.
Here’s a radical thought. Maybe City Hall should celebrate Columbus. Maybe Ohio should celebrate Ohio. Maybe American government buildings should celebrate America.
I know. Crazy concept.
And before anyone starts hyperventilating, let’s remember that this entire controversy disappeared the moment people noticed it. The city deleted the post faster than a politician deletes old tweets. That tells you everything you need to know.
Because if officials were truly proud of the decision, they’d be defending it. Instead, they ran for cover.
