San Diego County’s America 250 celebration sparks backlash after DEI makeover drives sponsor away
What began as a celebration of America’s 250th birthday is now drawing criticism from local officials who say Democratic leaders transformed a patriotic event into an exercise in identity politics.
Internal county emails and planning documents obtained by Fox News Digital reveal that San Diego County’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration has been reshaped under directives from the county’s Democrat-controlled Board of Supervisors, placing heavy emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives while pushing traditional Independence Day themes into the background.
The controversy centers on an event originally proposed by Republican Supervisor Jim Desmond as a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Desmond’s proposal highlighted San Diego’s historic connection to America’s military, civic institutions, and national defense. But after the measure reached the board, the county’s Democratic majority approved amendments directing planners to work with the Office of Equity and Racial Justice and other county agencies to incorporate programming focused on tribal nations, immigrant communities, LGBT groups, and other populations described as “historically underserved.”
According to planning documents, the event is expected to begin with a tribal blessing, land acknowledgment, and tribal invocation before moving into nearly two hours of presentations centered on various identity groups, including tribal, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, LGBT, and Black communities.
The revised format has prompted criticism from local leaders who argue that America’s founding and the meaning of Independence Day have been pushed aside.
El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells blasted the plans, posting an alternative agenda on social media.
“I have an alternative plan: 1. Acknowledge America and its greatness. 2. Celebrate with fireworks and the American National Anthem.”
Wells later told Fox News Digital, “Independence Day, especially this one, is about celebrating and honoring America. What the county of San Diego has created ignores this in favor of grievance and a sense that our country is not great or worthy of pride. That’s just offensive, especially in light of the fact that they’re using taxpayer money to do so.”
The criticism intensified after internal county communications revealed that at least one prospective sponsor declined to participate after being asked to complete paperwork affirming support for the county’s DEI priorities and policies regarding immigrant communities.
According to the emails, the sponsor’s planned $2,500 contribution never materialized after the organization declined to sign the required forms.
The loss came as county staff were already discussing budget concerns and a shortfall affecting stage, sound, and lighting plans for the event.
Club for Growth President David McIntosh mocked the event schedule, saying, “The official government July 4th itinerary of San Diego reads like the opening ceremony of the Democratic Socialists of America convention.”
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck also weighed in, arguing that the event’s focus on selected identity groups undermines the unifying purpose of Independence Day.
The event is still scheduled to conclude with fireworks and the National Anthem. The question many local residents are asking is why those elements appear to have become secondary attractions at a celebration supposedly honoring the birth of the United States.
Leave it to California Democrats to take the 250th birthday of the United States and somehow make America the least important part of the party.
You almost have to admire the commitment.
Most Americans hear “Fourth of July” and think of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington, fireworks, the Constitution, hot dogs, and maybe arguing with relatives over who gets the last hamburger.
San Diego County’s political class apparently hears “Fourth of July” and thinks, “You know what this celebration needs? More bureaucracy, more land acknowledgments, and a mandatory DEI loyalty pledge.”
A sponsor wanted to help fund the event. The county responded with paperwork. The sponsor responded with an exit.
What’s especially revealing is that nobody involved seems capable of understanding why people are upset. Americans aren’t opposed to hearing about different communities. They aren’t opposed to recognizing history. They aren’t opposed to inclusion. They’re opposed to turning every single public event into a progressive group therapy session.
This is America’s birthday. Not the annual convention of the Department of Grievance Studies.
The Founders pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to create the greatest experiment in self-government ever conceived. Two hundred and fifty years later, county officials appear determined to celebrate that achievement by explaining everything America got wrong.
The good news is that ordinary Americans don’t need government planners to tell them how to celebrate their country.
They’ll do what they’ve always done. They’ll fly the flag. They’ll sing the Anthem. They’ll watch the fireworks.
And they’ll celebrate the greatest nation on Earth — whether the county bureaucracy approves or not.
